Ooohhh, 44 "possible" deaths associated with kratom! My goodness!!!

More people die of skateboarding accidents per year...

Meanwhile, the U.S. medical industry is still the #1 cause of death in the U.S.

Par for the course. Keep the status quo. Nothing to concern yourself with people.

Please keep posting on Facebook and believing what the news says...

Wut?
Freedom's so hard
When we are all bound by laws
Etched in the scheme of nature's own hand
Unseen by all those who fail
In their pursuit of fate

Wut? indeed.

Thanks for the heads up Starway. It's better to propagate safety information as it's available even if it is only "possible" and "only" 44 people. Possible salmonella contamination lead to a nationwide recall of virtually an entire month's supply of spinach in the entirety of the distribution chain of the united states and canada only last year, and that was linked to even less cases than this if I recall correctly.

To dismiss this out of hand so flippantly is dangerous policy.

Even if the assumptions from the OP are missing evidence, these comparisons are just pointless. To argue, that one thing is f.e. more dangerous than the other, doesn't say anything about its own properties (the point of this thread). It is not a "better-than" but a "stand-for-its-own" idea.

All it is about, is providing information.

So on the local television news last night they reported this story, saying three folks in my area have gotten ill.

They aren't saying anything about the brands associated, only that it is kratom making people sick. All three cases here were people in widely separated areas geographically.

Strange. Does anyone know what really going on with this?

Sounds like if they were truly trying to make a public service announcement they would be showing what specific brands caused it...

Then again, the less on-air exposure there is, the better... the last thing we need is pics of "Captain Kratom" and "Super K" art animated bags on the TV... It'll just make us look bad.

What do you mea it will make "us" look bad, cosmiclion? Are you talking about kratom users?

I'm also interested now in what's going on with this, it all seems kind of far fetched...

On a pointless note, when I was in a public bathroom today I'm pretty sure I saw a little kratom powder on the sink.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, they had shots of every weird brand of it out there, just no info on which if any of the ones shown had anything to do with anything.

At the end the announcer mentioned that "some people have reported that it helps opioid withdrawal but the fda bla bla bla", with a certain amount of detectable derision in their tone of voice.

I don't even like anything about kratom, but this seems like a smear campaign against a plant.

They weren't able to criminalize it and I guarantee some pharma reps/lobbyists want it illegal so they can isolate and sell synthetic actives.

That's my two cent conspiracy theory anyway.

the plot thickens...

Quote:
PDX Aromatics of Portland, Oregon DBA Kraken Kratom, Phytoextractum, and Soul Speciosa, has initiated a recall of certain kratom-containing powder products because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections

Shoot, locals. Crying or very sad

These guys have been around for awhile, never dealt with them but they have always provided a professional appearance as far as their business operations. They used to have a wide variety of ethnos, but now focus on the (more profitable) kratom.

It seems like they are just doing this as mostly as precaution, although it says one of their samples tested positive. I don't know how it is spread, how would kratom be contaminated? I thought it came from animal feces, that's why it's often on lettuce and low-lying crops.

The whole of the statement, including brands:
Quote:
PDX Aromatics of Portland, Oregon DBA Kraken Kratom, Phytoextractum, and Soul Speciosa, has initiated a recall of certain kratom-containing powder products because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The affected powder products are packaged in plastic heat sealed pouches and sold in 28 grams, 56 grams, and 112 grams. The products total an estimated 10,000 units and were sold directly to consumers via company websites between January 18, 2018 and February 18, 2018.
