i heard about an expirment Paul Stamets did with a large area of land destroyed by a chemical/oil spill or somethign like that. No life at all, not even bacteria could live there it was so screwed up. He innoculated part of it and within weeks new leaves were breaking thru the soil, insects everywhere, exploding with life. The mushrooms saved the landscape, healed it and cleaned it.
So im thinking about the possibility of the shit hitting the fan here pretty soon, and I was wondering if maybe mushrooms could help heal and clean the planet if/when we fuck it all up. Is this even remotely possible? Anybody know anything about mycology? Maybe these doomsday preppers should be adding spore syringes to their survival packs?
*edit, i guess it wouldnt have to be psilocybin mushrooms, actually more edible mushrooms might be more beneficial if ppl are really starving, but if your gonna have mushrooms anyway why not right?

I hadn't heard about this before but it does sound interesting. From a quick google it seems it may have been a diesel oil spill. Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World by Paul Stamets (And a light-hearted review: http://jmney-grimm.com/tag/paul-stamets/) I'll have to look into it more but the results of the experiment sound magnificent. Personally, I think once Earth is a wasteland I'll get some mushrooms going regardless and if I save the world with it then woohooooooooooo! The inner soul is full of joy. Reveal my secrets and sew me whole. With each day, "I" heeds your call. You may not care the slightest and may not be the brightest, but from here "I" sees you're mighty for you created it all.
And the jumbling sea rose above the wall.
Through this chaos comes the order you enthrall.

lol, yea to be honest what started me on this chain of thought is I was wondering how I could still smoke herb after the shit hits the fan. yes i know that is very stupid, if it does happen and i survive it thats going to be the last thing on my mind, i think ill be more worried about food water and shelter. But if you did survive it I dont think it would be very hard to bring some spores and produce seeds with you. If the mushrooms could clean the soil like in Stamets experiment, you could start a garden. (assuming the sun isnt blocked for years from all the nuclear dust kicked up in the blast)

Mushrooms accumulate Radioactivity in their Fruitbodys, so you could get some of the Radioactivity out of the Earth , but your harvested Mushrooms would be toxic waste rquiring proper deposit. I think it was the Brugmansia plant which accumulates heavy metals if grown on contaminated land. Had he more quickly realized just who they were,he would have shown them more respect.Had he tried harder to fathom their brilliant minds,he would have taken more of their teachings to heart.Had he more clearly understood the purpose of their being, he would have more vigorously tried to assist them. They were truly honorable; he was sadly prejudiced. They were exceedingly well informed; he was grossly ignorant. They were totally indefatigable; he so often, and so quickly, gave up. Still, for many years there was a strong inter-species alliance between the Eleven-Eleven of the Half-way Realm, their Seraphic Associates, and their flesh-and-blood friend, a common mortal. Much was accomplished, many profited, and, there’s only one regret...They could have achieved so much more... All Hypnotizing Hypnotizes Hypnotizing

Mycoremediation and Phytoremediation may be just the cures we need right now.

awesome, I knew somebody around here would be more knowledgeable about this. That is really amazing from the sounds of that wiki article mushrooms can handle just about anything. Somebodys gotta get the word out. Doomsday preppers: GET SOME SPORES! This really facinates me, i wonder how hard it would be to make a living studying mycology.
