I placed an order for both of these strains from good ol' r@1ph...

I've been searching all over trying to find some decent info about these strains but I haven't found anything worth while yet. Just that Syzygy is from Terence and Wollongong is from down under.

Does anyone have any experience growing these mushrooms? Is there anything special that I need to be aware of before I begin?

I will be using one of the Mega Mushroom Growing & Incubator Kits from m!dwestgr0wk1ts.

I know most of you guys and gals don't like the kits but I have absolutely no experience with mushrooms and I kinda like the idea of having training wheels to get started.

Thanks for any input Smile

Wolly is my favorite cube without a doubt.

Fast colonization, aggressive growth, and the most massive fruits possible. I love the experience they provide very much. You got me wanting to start another wolly grow Pleased

have fun good luck

Thank you brother... It was actually your post in the favorite cubes thread that made me choose the Wollongong.

I chose the Syzygy because of it's novelty and figured if it's good enough for Terence, it's good enough for me.

I'd be interested to see how your wolly grow turns out; keep us posted! Smile

I just inoculated my jars last night. I got 18 jars with the kit, so I inoculated 9 with each strain. Hopefully they'll colonize pretty quick with no contamination. I cleaned the area pretty good, showered, brushed my teeth and used mouthwash. I then doused all exposed skin with alcohol just to be safe. Once I felt I was reasonably sterilized, I knocked up the jars in front of the stove.

So while those are doing their thing, I'm gonna try to make some liquid culture so when I start the bulk grow, it will hopefully colonize a little quicker. I'll post some pics when I have something worth showing. Smile

For the bulk grow, I'm thinking about using Zoo Poo (manure from the giraffes and zebras at the zoo) to see how that goes. I don't know anyone with horses so I figure zoo poo is the next best thing.

Syzygy is my favorite strain Smile

The fruits are exceptional; large, beautiful, dense, and very potent. I think you'll be very pleased with this one. Those Wallongongs look pretty awesome as well.

Nice choices Thumbs up

Well, I inoculated 18 jars on the 14th and so far I've only had two contaminations. A little bit of black and a little bit of olive... Not too bad for a first try I guess...

Is there anything I can do with these contaminated jars so they aren't completely wasted?

I live in Florida so I was thinking about just setting them outside in the shade under a humidity dome and see what happens. I'm a bit reluctant because I've heard that the mold can be pretty toxic... I hear some people throw the entire jar away when they get contaminated. That seems like such a waste to me... Is it really necessary?

The rest of the jars are coming along nicely.

One of them colonized fully way ahead of the rest of them. It's been fully colonized for about 3 days now. The rest of them are taking their time.

How long can that one stay in the jar w/o causing any damage?

Should I try fruiting it on it's own while the others play catch up?

Melcat,
Grew the Syzygy. was cool. I had a pet strain collected on the tex/mex border that did the best for me so I mostly grew it.
You shoulda talked fungi when you were up here, me and mrs have much experience with them.

Any contamination, yeah, get rid of the jar. I'll say tho, toss it in a pile of straw/manure. This often makes for the best fruits.
Indoors as stagnant as it is, once a contam gets rocking, it's a big problem. Outdoors, not so much so.

Drop me a line if ya ever need to, I grew a bunch in this area.

Just birthed ten cakes of Syzygy last night! My first "birthday" in over 10 years! So excited to see the results! Using the PF Tek, as I'm an old-timer with this stuff and that's all there really was back in my day. If any of you youngsters have some good tips on how to do it better, let me know. I'd like to get some bulk grows eventually, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for open air manure teks. I've got kids and a career and that doesn't sound terribly clandestine.

I have an abundance of experience is this hobby...Very happy

Strains I have worked with include.......

Brazillian, thia mystery, Lipa yai, KSS, KSS super, Cambodian, Guadalajara, Huautla, pink buffaloe, b+, gulf coast, south american.....a few others I have forgotten lol..
All cubes....IMO all provided different an unique trips...

I have tried to grow cyan and mexicana but have no luck with that..

So I use the pf method but with a twist.....

I find that using small jars makes for way less contamination for one thing....

secondly I dunk the cakes in cold bottled spring water and let them sit a few minutes... With some strains cold water is benificial to dunk in other strains don't need it, I tend to do it anyway just incase.

Dunking uppped my yeild ------ incredibly

To inoculate other jars I just clean my work area and trnsfr mycelium from one mother jar to other new jars QUICKLY using a sterilized spoon--- If you stir the spoon around abit and try to innoculate all parts of the jar you can get colinization in like 7-10 days with some strains

this way I gt a sea of shroom style yeild....ONe strain stays vigerous for months and years possiibly if you keep switching up the medium....

I always try to isolate the most vigerous looking jar and make that my mother jar...

I can get brazilian to grow start to finish in 35 days from spore...20 dsays from an inoculated jar. KSS is faster but- tiny

BTW I find it is better to over sterilize than under sterilize the jars .....again, dunking helps this....I usually steilize about 8 little jars for 35-40 minutes at 15psi in the pressure cooker.

Smile

Just throw those contamed jars out in your garden and yard in a shaded area and they might fruit nicely. Good luck with this hopefully you'll get as big of a fruit as the giant one up there.

I have been lamenting the low output of the Szyzgy I planted a couple months ago. Then today, the cakes EXPLODED. Harvested four HUGE monsters at least a gram each wet. and there are twenty or thirty babies on their way as we speak. Slow starter, but growing more interesting as we speak. I have been using the technique of a bed of perlite and setting the cakes directly on top of it. I lifted the cakes to pull a baby off, and low and behold, there's TONS of babies on the bottom, growing right into the perlite/water! Lets see what happens.

Wollongong is definitely worth growing. I've had nothing but luck with this strain. Highly recommended.

After the 3rd flush, I threw the bulk cake outside on top of some wet straw.

This is what I wake up to each day since then. Smile
