Charlotte Walsh - Untapped Possibilities of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971
Envisioning A Post Prohibition World, September 2011

Quote:
Filmed at the recent Envisioning A Post Prohibition World event. Charlotte Walsh discusses Casey Hardison’s legal argument that the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 is not being correctly applied by the Home Secretary and the Advisory Council for Misuse of Drugs. Hardison’s argument was due to be given a High Court hearing in November 2011 but he recently received a letter cancelling the hearing. The reason given was that he is a ‘vexatious litigant’.

Charlotte lectures in law at the University of Leicester. Her specialism is at the intersection of criminal justice, drug policy and neuroscience. She is a founder member of the Drug Equality Alliance, an organisation that campaigns for equal rights and protection of all drug users. She is involved in advising individuals prosecuted for activities involving plant psychedelics.

Wow. I'm not sure if I'm left more heartened or depressed by that talk. The reassurance that calmly intelligent people are probing the legal absurdities of the MDAact and pressing for credible reform is dulled by the stark evidence that successive home secretaries obviously worry more about right wing media hounding than about the letter of the law. How do you rationally counter such madness?
Sometimes I believe that this less material life is our truer life, and that our vain presence on the terraqueous globe is itself the secondary or merely virtual phenomenon.

Thanks for posting this, an interesting video.

It really highlights the circular nature of drugs policy argumentation from the government.

I have no doubt that the policy will change, basically people are misinformed about the harm of drugs. Policy should be evidence based.

It was interesting the comment at the end, talking about how things are changed and that people power will be the ultimate device. We will have to communicate the irrational view of people that believe that ALL drugs are harmful to the person and society.

It will be slow work but the moral zeitgeist will change if we promote and communicate the facts and not the dogma.
I like to make things up, everything above is made up and not real, it is a story for my own amusement. Sorry if you felt mislead.

I normally have to edit my posts within a couple of minutes for prose, spelling and grammar. Just to let you know.

Good speech, but Casey should have made a point of mentioning that Drugs are now an ingrained part of society like cigarettes and alcohol are. Perhaps then he would have had a better argument. But he knew the risks and took a big risk, and paid the price....

Yes, a greater price than Rudolf Hess who helped kill so many millions Shocked (he only got 17 years) or rapists/murderers.

And as she says, meanwhile the tobacco pushers get peerages and government influence. 'tis truly a f*cked up world we live in! .Confused

IIRC, Rudolf Hess got life at Nuremburg; he was banged up till he died in 1987.But I agree, Limeni, with your sentiments on how effed up our world is! Sad
I am paranoid of my brain. It thinks all the time, even when I'm asleep. My thoughts assail me. Murderous lechers they are. Thought is the assassin of thought. Like a man stabbing himself with one hand while the other hand tries to stop the blade. Like an explosion that destroys the detonator. I am paranoid of my brain. It makes me unsettled and ill at ease. Makes me chase my tail, freezes my eyes and shuts me down. Watches me. Eats my head. It destroys me.
