Why don't you create some kind of "Psychedelic Music Interpretation" Thread?
Seems like the better alternative to creating 2 or more seperate threads about single songs.

Or maybe simply ask the artist?

idk but maybe this is about ayahuasca

the chorus even seems to say "hey yage, yage"

let go - imogen heap

Drink up, baby down
Mmm, are you in or are you out
Leave your things behind
'cause it's all going off without you
Excuse me, too busy you're writing your tragedy
These mishaps
You bubble wrap
When you've no idea what you're like

So let go, so let go, jump in
Oh well, whatcha waiting for
It's alright
'cause there's beauty in the breakdown
So let go, let go, just get in
Oh, it's so amazing here
It's alright
'cause there's beauty in the breakdown

It gains the more it gives
And then it rises with the fall
So hand me that remote
Can't you see that all that stuff's a sideshow

Such boundless pleasure
We've no time for later now
You can't await your own arrival
You've 20 seconds to comply

So let go, so let go, jump in
Oh well, whatcha waiting for
It's alright
'cause there's beauty in the breakdown
So let go, let go, just get in
Oh, it's so amazing here
It's alright
'cause there's beauty in the breakdown

So let go, jump in
Oh well, whatcha waiting for
It's alright
'cause there's beauty in the breakdown
So let go, let go, just get in
Oh, it's so amazing here
It's alright
'cause there's beauty in the breakdown
'cause there's beauty in the breakdown
'cause there's beauty in the breakdown
grow plants, make tea, love life

idk if that song alludes to DMT usage in particular, but I sure as hell know that this masterpiece does:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZXJLQntCP0
'"ALAS,"said the mouse, "the world is growing smaller every day. At the
beginning it was so big that I was afraid, I kept running and running, and I was glad
when at last I saw walls far away to the right and left, but these long walls have
narrowed so quickly that I am in the last chamber already, and there in the corner
stands the trap that I must run into." "You only need to change your direction," said
the cat, and ate it up.' --Franz Kafka

I think these songs are about psilocybin, but they always made me think about DMT.

Eyedea - the dive one and two

It starts out with a question. How much of it is real?
The skepticism sets in, and lessens your appeal
Next, you study conspiracy, develop some theories
And become extra wary of all your previous learned material
Your tolerence for stupidity degrades
Most of your friends seem to be trapped in the maze
You narrow your associates down to the few you can stand
And even they sometimes wonder what's going on in that head of yours
You study east and western philosophy, psychology, physics
You think a lot more, and start to question existence
You wonder about your nervous system's limits
You tamper with reality maps, and then ask hallucinogenic induced
"Who am I's? What am I? Am I forever?"
All information breathes in the shallow dark halls of never
You can see where it's leading. You wish you were dreaming
If the castle crumbles no one's there to put it back together

[Hook]
Have you ever felt yourself slippin' away?
Where all you think about's your sanity, and how it decayed?
There's no place to run, no place to hide
You can't escape from inside, and you're losing your mind
You try to think of when it started, and ask yourself why
But each thought deepens the sickness and completes the desert dry
Fear feeds the derangement of the inner eye
With nothing left you find yourself falling to madness so you...
... cry to your god, and act normal to your peers
What if God ain't hearing you? That's your only fear
Each day you think more about your psychosis
No one but you can help you, and you know this
That's the craziest part of it all
In your rational mind, you only know two things for sure
One is that your totally nuts
And the other is that you're the only one with the cure
It doesn't make sense, it's not how you imagined
You never knew it could just happen
You thought it came from stress, suicide, a near death experience
War, drug trips, low pay, carelessness
You've heard plenty of stories about schizophrenia
But never had evidence of one who thought himself mad
You're going crazy, and desperately reachin' for reason
But the strain to stay sane's your only demon; best believe it
You finally realize that you've always lived in hell
No human model or metaphor can explain how you fell
The puzzle's alive, and it changes as you try to escape it
It created time and made it appear to pass by
You don't know what you think. You don't think what you know
You're a total lunatic, and afraid it's starting to show
Where do you go when your brain is your worst enemy?
The six hundred and sixty six foot tall bridge on seventh street?
You're scared. You're scared. Why are you so scared?
There'd be no problem if you didn't care
Now you've truly formed an opinion about heaven
It starts out with a question, and this is what it ends in

Now I know you've felt yourself slip away
Now all you think about's your sanity, and how it decayed
There's no place to run. No place to hide
You can't escape the fact that you've lost your mind
You can't erase your mistakes. There's no way to rewind
The harder you look, the harder it is to find
Fear feeds the derangement of the inner eye
With nothing left you find yourself falling to madness, so you dive
So you dive [repeated]

And with each foot you fall
The voice in your head starts to sound more and more like yours

Eyedea - bonus

I found myself
falling to madness
so I dove
the best thing I ever did was
let go
let go
I found myself
falling to madness
so I dove
the best thing I ever did was
let go
let go
See life is a play
we're always acting out
without ever seeing it
from the writer's
or audience's point of view
but we reach infinite
when we become the writers and the actor and the audience
at the exact same time
So hear you are
and now you understand
you always were here
that why you always ran
but you can only run away for so long
before you catch up with yourself and
become part of the song
I'd like to welcome you
to the heaven you've created
I tell the truth
this is the wisdom of the ancients
holding on to something
contradicts our being
so fly free
fly free
fly free, fly free
Maybe I had to go crazy
to get where I am
I felt myself slippin away
and I let myself fall
gotta lose your mind
before you find it
and when you find you find it
you find out
you never lost it at all
there's a natural flow
that's attached to your soul
it don't ask you to go
it just gradually pulls
it's always now when you're never not you
so follow yourself
'cus if nothing else
your existence is true
Have you ever felt yourself slipping away
I am,
I mean,
I was
slipping away
but no matter what I am, I'm me
and I know me so I'm okay
Have you ever felt yourself slipping away
you are,
I mean,
you were
slipping away
but no matter what you are, you're you
and you know you so you're okay
I'm not a poet or a communist
a comet or a star
you're not a genius or a prophet
you just are
I'm not insane
'cus i have no need
for my sanity
It's just another chain
that keeps me from reality
reality is mine
to play with and mold
the best thing i ever did was let go
let go
so let go of the models
transcend the physical mind
and peacefully become
part of the whole
the walls came tumbling down
but this time it was for??
running around
lookin' for my feet
now they're part of the ground
and make the ground complete
live in the now
and forever be at peace
live in the now
don't stray away from the cycle
I'm one with the universe
one with the life flow
when you know that
that which is below is above
the fear that you once had will become love
(feel the love)
Have you ever felt yourself slipping away
I am,
I mean,
I was
slipping away
but no matter what I am, I'm me
and I know me so I'm okay
Have you ever felt yourself slipping away
you are,

Eyedea - powder water too

If someone grew up in a cubicle as Plato once suggested
They would only know the cubicle and not the world outside it
And they wouldn't view the cubicle as something geometric
We only know it's a cubicle because we live outside

Now the one inside the cubicle can't comprehend its measurements
Because measurements are models made up for and by observers
Relative to their position on the outside of the cubicle
They understand objectively so they can study further

If I grew up in a cubicle the walls limit my universe
I have no knowledge of the entirety like the outsiders do
If you follow what I say and can swallow the powdered water
Close your eyes and open your mind, this one's for you

The brain equals a cubicle we'll never think outside it
Now decide I wanna try to tie a diagram or modify it
I'm man that’s a hybrid of a body of a pirate
Of a soul that can fly without control

Realizing the brain takes in six billion signals per second
most of which are hidden and not given to the senses
We’re limited to a few futile primitive tools of perception
Living in a universal pool of first hand deception

The mind's job is to receive the signals
And block the ones out that coincide with imprinted symbols
That way the information you obtained is recognized
Reality is thinkable and comparable to space and time

It makes a map of the territory that gives us
The topic of the Copenhagen interpretation of modern quantum
Physics which states we don’t know the meal
We only know the menu that our brains tell us is real

We don’t know the rules of our heads
From inside these cubicles we can’t see the truth
No one really knows exactly what happens when we think
Therefore we can never really ever know anything

Oh, hell yeah!
I had the same feeling about a lot of Eyedea's lyrics! It is sad, that he can no longer create music.
I always wonder in which direction he would have gone, while listening to him.

A lot of rappers try to incorporate Psychedelic attidudes or references into their lyrics, but only very few do it authentically, in my opinion.

Sadistik, for example, has a few good songs about psychedelics, like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fiYHKrGaPw

No Bird Sing --> http://nobirdsing.bandcamp.com/
&
Kill the Vultures ---> http://killthevultures.bandcamp.com/

are also interpretable as "under psychedelic influence" (Although that is for nobody else to say but the artist, I guess).

I'm not going to go to far into this, but, if you listen to this interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCIiPH6IpPQ combined with this interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLnqmM8g47k he explains how he faked his death, eyedea died so mikey could have an anonymous life, traveling to cofee houses and talking to people, as he put it...you have to listen to both of these in full to get it, you can't jump around, just listen to the whole thing on both links.

Eyedea was a character, "breaking the fourth wall".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8jQpTaCnPw
Just before his death he was even seen wearing "eyedea is dead" t-shirts, though this really is not very relevant unless you hear those two interviews.

I know if you look at the official story, or the internet, or rhymesayers site, or anywhere it will say his mom found him dead, that's the official story, and if that's really what happened I mean no disrespect.

It reminds me of this sage song andyKaufman

Sage francis actually had some really psychedelic stuff, and he is straight edge, but the introspective and philosophical nature of some of his lyrics are definantly what I would call psychedelic in some sense.

Have you heard lucid optics? Good stuff, I think he touches on psychedelic issues in an authentic way as well.

Wow, that's a far out theory, it would be awesome if true!
I didn't pick anything up in these interviews, but I knew about his "persona-problems", and with the t-shirt... you may be right, thats a dead give-away!
I dont even know if there ever has been an official press article about his death, seems to me like at least local news would have picked it up, if it would have been true.

I didn't know about Lucid Optics aswell, your links didnt work for me, but found a different yt-video, and looked for the bandcamp site:

Amazing, thanks for sharing!

I was trying to avoid going into this...

Ok, let me put my crazy hat on for a moment:

Keep in mind Mike was a philosophical thinker, and a writer, and great with subtleties and double and triple entendre. don't think about what he is telling you, think about why he is telling you these things

Either he knew he was about to die, or he was going to kill himself, or he faked his death.

(Plus everybody was really weird about it when it happened, no public funeral, nobody public ever saw the body, and even the cause of death was with-held for quite some time, and is still murky, opioid overdose I think...plus weeks before eyedea and a bunch of rhymesayers cats were all wearing the "eyedea is dead" t-shirts...)

It's been a while since I re-listened to those interviews... and yeah, it's no where near as obvious as I remember it being , I guess it would only be obvious if you were currant with the situation or knew Mike...or maybe I was looking into things that were not there.

Any way, I outlined some pieces which made me think he was hinting that he was faking his death...

·I always snitch on myself

·First interview: at 2:59 he speaks about his philosophical mentor "Krishna", "he was born a messiah" says eyedea (keep in mind Mike was a childhood prodigy in rap battles), then decided that it was stupid to be part of this whole system, and rejected it all, and spent his time walking around talking to people, learning life...which coincidentally is exactly what eyedea would end up doing if he faked his death.

Most of it after that is just philosophical talk...but it relates in subtle ways.

Interview two

·Aka Bobby obvious, aka (insert long list of names) letting us know he is a man of many "characters", I think he was breaking the fourth wall most his life...

· :30 seconds in: I think the metallica piece was exactly what he wanted to avoid, and is a good metaphor for his situation...good explanation for killing the character

·At 1:28 he goes into "breaking the fourth wall" bringing characters to life in the real world.

·1:50 we never finished the novel, I'm notorious for starting things then getting board...meaning he never "wrote" an end to eyedea either, he just killed the character...

·4:40 Before music, what jobs were you working
Eyedea: medical records clerk
(What a perfect job for a person who wants to fake their death )

Then the "eyedea is dead" shirts everybody, including Mike, was wearing weeks before his death...

It was just a strange situation all around...

But your probably right, and I may just be looking into things that are not there.

Prints prophets - DMT song

I'm not sure how I found this, it's obviously about DMT, it's a bit less "authentic" regarding the psychedelic experience than some other stuff out there, but it's better than esham's attempt at DMT songs...

Gangrene & the alchemists & ohno! - vodka and ayahuasca

The above song, and album, (ayahuasca and vodka) was actually ok, but was not really psychedelic, even though they are talking about ayahuasca, they missed the core of the psychedelic experience... not bad album though.
