The Gallery Six Elements

A Myst style exploration game to be made for virtual reality.
It will be custom made to use the Oculus Rift (head mounted display) and the Razer Hydra (for hand control).

Head over to their kickstarter page and help out if you think this looks promising/amazing.

The oculus team has just released a version of their HMD to game developers.
The consumer product will according to their plans be released next year and "will"
feature 1080p stereoscopic 3d with head tracking and a 110 degree FOV...or maybe better.

First games announced was Hawken and Team fortress 2 but there are already people who are
working on mods for older games like Half Life 2, Crysis, Skyrim etc.

The Gallery is the first game that is produced with the Rift as a basis for the experience and
is not a modification.

Over at "Meant to be seen" you can read more about the projects being made for the rift.

Another game that will include Rift support is a space sim called "Star Citizen" which looks really promising although
this game has already been funded.

Here's a demo from january of the Oculus Rift. You'll find lots of impressions on youtube
since people have just recently started to get their developer kits.

This is a very scary invention, awesome nontheless!
The lumiere brothers, one of the inventors of the cinema as we know it made this short film, featuring a train arriving at the station. Myth has it, that the audience jumped off their seats because they thought the train would run over them....

The Rift might be so new to our senses, that we have to find a way to adapt to it...but then, a proto-holodeck is near.....

Just imagine combining this device with the kinect sensors, they're actually working on it. You'll be able to see your hands in the game as you're moving them.

Also, (just to justify my image) imagine the new 3D technology nvidia has recently revealed. In the future, it will be possible to create photorealistic CGI porn...and these character will interact with your virtual body (kinect). It's great, that the first virtual reality fleshlight is now on the market. You synchronize it to "move" with the flick you're watching.

There are, of course, quite a few scientific applications as well.

I've been waiting a couple decades for this kind of technology to be released on a mass scale.

Definitely scary. What is certain is that it will be demonised and accused of creating murderers
like rock & roll, heavy metal, arcade games, playstation etc "did" before it...of course this is probably true in some
cases as some people are crazy.

"The leap" does just that but from trying it out, the creators of "The Gallery" at least said it wasn't really there yet.

People say that it's weird when they try to move their hands etc but nothing happens in game.
Like using a gamepad when driving some people say is awkward.
If using a real steering wheel as a controler it will be more immersive.
Standing up in games that the person is standing up in is also more immersive.
The Razer Hydra seems to be the best solution now in the "beginning" of the vr revolution.
You can see them try it out on The Gallerys homepage (or maybe it was the kickstarter page).

Some guy made what I think is the ideal controller for VR-shooters and modded it for Half Life 2.
To look behind you you have to turn 360 degrees. The gun has an analogue nub to control your movement
backwards, forwards and sideways. Both the Rift and the Gun have been mounted with positional
trackers (The Rift team will probably implement this themselves on commercial launch) which makes it possible to lean in around corners and your gun points in realtime exactly
where you are pointing it yourself.
The problem with Half Life 2 though is that you dont aim trough your barrel so it's a bit like shooting from the hip.
Still cool though.

It gets really cool at the minute mark when he starts to lean in around corners.

There was a guy over at MTBS forum that started an x-rated project but his funders pulled out, leaving him in the dirt.
It's quite obvious that others will follow that path though.

And what are the implications as a learning tool in schools? Mind boggling...
