I was looking for some advice on working with a separation funnel for separating naptha and the basified solution. When I'm mixing with a jar, I can shake it up and store it in a rice cooker on the "warm" setting which keeps it nice and warm without being too hot. After 4-5 mixes that way, I transfer to the separation funnel for the final mixture and separation. Here's where I'm a little confused, I'm not sure how to keep the solution warm or if that is even necessary at this point. Will some DMT fall out of the naptha layer if it drops to room temperature?

I usually let it sit in the separation funnel for at least an hour to make sure it's completely separated. By then the solution has usually cooled down to room temperature. I'm worried if I try to rush it and work quicker that I will end up with lye in the organic layer and that's obviously not good.

Thanks in advance Thumbs up

EDIT - I have one more dumb question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Suppose I was using a magnetic stirrer as opposed to shaking the jar, should I keep the lid on or off while stirring? It builds up pressure so I was assuming maybe to poke a hole as a vent or something.

I just bought a separator funnel (2000ml). But getting more conscious about the influence of the temperature I was wondering the same thing as you do.

I don't know the answer. But I would say it is a dynamic balance. So when the temperature is changing the balance will change. With other words some DMT will go back in the water. When this is the case. The method of using a separator funnel is not interesting anymore as you can't keep it warm enough.

Well that IS something important to think about. As it could be dangerous. Your solution of making a little hole will solve the problem. The pressure has to be stabilized after a reaction. But when you are going to shake the jar you have to be cautious with the hole!

Do you have a magnetic stirrer or are you making one, like this one! Smile

If you are planning to put metal in the jar you have to do research what metal you are using and if this metal is ok to use.

I am curious about the reasons why you want to use a magnetic stirrer. Did you find out that people have better results with it? Is there an other reason? On which moments do you want to use it?

how is it going?
did you solve your problem?

Once the DMT is in solution in the naptha it should stay in solution unless it cools right down and starts to precipitate crystals, which would normally take some time (weeks) unless you live in a very cold area/house.

As for building up pressure while it's on the stir plate, it can, especially in the initial phase while the lye undergoing an exothermic reaction with water/plant material. After the exothermic reaction has finished there should only be a minimal amount of pressure in the vessel.

But, but, but.
It depends on when you put it on the stir plate. If you add the lye and then put it straight on the plate it will produce a considerable amount of pressure.

Play it safe and make a small ventilation hole to be sure, and be sure to do it all in a well ventilated area.

& don't use a metal stir bar spend a few bucks and get a teflon coated stir bar.

Are you experienced with a magnetic stirrer? Do you think it is worth the hassle of making one? Because I am thinking about making one myself.
