The best part to collect wouldn't be bark at all, IMO. This is because Acacias tend to be sensitive plants, and bark damage often leads to sickness or death in them. If the leaves can be used (and I'm not sure if maidenii leaves can) then I would use the leaves, even if the bark is more potent. But don't strip too many of them from one plant, as that can be just as bad.

I think the bark on the outermost (small) branches can be used with minimal damage to the tree, but I'd wait for someone else to chime in before I went out and started stripping any kind of bark.

Respect the plants and they'll respect you back Smile

hey rossl... the phyllodes should be fine if the strain of maidenii you are using is active. There are both inactive to low yielding and high yielding strains. If you jump over to the "trying to improve acacia info" thread in the collaborative research section you will find info on the active strain. here's some photos that have been posted..

If you are careful then a good way to harvest would be to prune a couple branches.. the branch and stem bark is generally just as high or higher content than the trunk bark and is far less damaging to the tree to harvest. but again.. if the tree is active, the phyllodes should have it too just in smaller amounts. if worried about taking too many phyllodes you could always pick up some fallen ones as well

I just realized that maidenii is all over here, literally. Will start experimenting soon.

I am really excited, if the phyloides are active it could be a great source in these parts.

Thanks for the info.

Peace and love.
