Hello,

I did a quick search through the threads, and thought it would be best to repost this as a new topic. I appreciate anyone's help with this... I have had a few failures in the past and am very invested in making this work..

I got my hands on 500g of very very finely ground mhrb, almost powder consistency. I was wondering what you guys recommend as far as a/b vs stb. My concern is that with an a/b cook, the 'sludge' that may form from the liquidated mhrb would be very difficult to filter for further acid cooks, likely leaving behind a sludgy mess. Would you folks with experience recommend a stb with such a fine material? I thought it may be easier to just base it, and do the pulls straight from the base liquid, avoiding filtering steps.

Secondly, is defatting as important with mhrb as opposed to acacia and other fattier plants?

Thank you for your help, I am sure that it may be frustrating to restate these topics for the new-to-extraction crowd.

1) Don't be specific, but where the heck are you getting MHRB from!? I was under the impression that is was pretty much a done deal.

2) You can just do an A/B on MHRB and leave all the powder in the jars throughout the entire process. NO filtering necessary. I tried filtering very very fine powder of Acacia mearnsii that was cooked in an acid soup, and the mixture just sat in the coffee filter in the funnel doing nothing. I think maybe two drops fell through after 10 minutes.

Just keep the plant material in throughout the entire process. Some people say that even gives them better yields. You might have to compensate for the fine powder by adding a bit more water and/or liquid base (drain cleaner) than you normally would. The super fine powder tends to trap non-polar solvents I guess.

I have very good experience with q21q21 second tek. I recommend that one. Here is my experience.

Thanks for the quick replies,

Sorry, unable to talk about sourcing. Suffice to say that if a simpleton like me can have luck, it cant be that hard.

I will read up on q21q21 tek #2. Initial obstacle may be finding a source for calcium hydroxide... I've got a ton of lye laying around, though it appears that lye is not the desired alkaline for this project. I have been doing some initial searches this morning... it looks like Ms Wages pickling lime is available with a little wait, as it is no longer canning season. (Damn you walmart). Is this the source you guys would recommend?

Whatchamacallit's STB tek is the easiest tek and there is no straining of the sludge so it works well w/ powdered mhrb. The trick (in my opinion) is to saturate the water with NaOH. Forget trying to achieve a perfect pH and just put it in unil you can't dissolve anymore. I omitted the Epsom wash and came out with a level of perfection that I have never reached before. Also, SLOW evap in a dark place yields large shards of crystals with perfect geometries. The only actual lab equip used was magnetic stir plate(home made $10), 1000ml round bottom and a Sep funnel. This stirrer is very handy for NaOH dissolution. I'll try to post the plans for the mag stir at some point.

I recommend Vodsels approach to the Q21Q21 tek. it simplifies things and makes drying in the oven no longer needed.

My bark is very fine, much like powdered sugar and did not make any part of this tech difficult.
