I tried pumping dry HCL gas through a solution of DMT in Toluene, expecting the DMTHCL to precipitate out, but nothing happened. Anybody know why it didn't work?

DMT HCl is not a solid, btw, it's too hygroscopic. Even if it would be possible to momentarily crystallize it, it would quickly turn into a goo.. If you want to precipitate DMT salts, try FASI/FASA.
Are you experienced with gasing? Are you aware of the potential dangers of this proceedure? Are you working with proper safety equipment/ventilation ?

the issue could be a couple of things..for starters, HCl should be dissociated into its conjugate ions to complex with DMT and form an ionic salt. thus, it would be more practical to just use aqueous HCl. the other issue may be DMT concentration in the toluene, perhaps it's not very saturated. @Zombiecyckel: Not using a tek. I had some DMT saturated Toluene left over from experiementing with concentrations, solvents, and time for an extraction. Figured I'd try to see if I could get a decent yield by pulling out a DMT HCL salt.
@endlessness: Ah, DMT HCL not being a solid might account for it. I figured the hygroscopicness wouldn't be an immediate issue as it would be surrounded by toluene which would block the water.
And yes all safety precautions were used while gassing it. Proper ventilation, respirators, goggles, a vacuum set up and gloves, of course, were used.
@benzyme: Okay, that makes sense. Thank you.

Water is very slightly soluble in Toluene. Unless you dried your toluene chances are any Hcl salt is caught up in residual water in the solvent. Perhaps. mistakes were made
