hi

I got some hexane from a local supplier but i have two questions for you guys.

1) read a little about Hexane fractions, which is what i got, and apparently they can be pretty nasty when inhaled, even a low doses? How careful should i be?

2) The supplier sent me the datga sheet for it and i would feel much more comfortable once you guys have looked it over and given me the go ahead. I've attached it as a pdf.

Thanks in advance guys.

The acute toxicity of n-hexane is low, although it is a mild anesthetic. Inhalation of high concentrations produces first a state of mild euphoria, followed by somnolence with headaches and nausea. The toxicity of n-hexane has been extensively discussed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.[6]

The long-term toxicity of n-hexane in humans is well known.[7] Extensive peripheral nervous system failure is known to occur in humans chronically exposed to levels of n-hexane ranging from 400 to 600 ppm, with occasional exposures up to 2,500 ppm.

It's toxic but from what wiki says it only get nasty when is cronichally inhaled.

I AM NOT saying it's safe to use it, it's still toxic and you have to be very careful, please take all the precautions you can think of.

As long as you're not huffing the stuff you should be fine. Don't take that literally though. I mean if you're working with it, you're going to inhale the vapors at some point. Just don't expose yourself to the vapors for long periods of time. If you're just using it for recrystallization, the amount needed is so small that it's nothing to worry about. Personally, I wouldn't even be worried about doing pulls with it as far as vapor inhalation goes.

If you are that worried and just want to be on the safe side, wrap a bandanna around your face or buy those little masks you can get at Home Depot or Lowes that people use to avoid vapors from paint thinners and such.

thanks for the reply, though i am talking about Hexane...not n-Hexane.

The hexane i have is referred to as a Hexane Fraction.

Have either of you checked out the MSDS i attached to the question? Some info on that would be great.

Thanks again.
