Heya!
I was wondering if there would be a big difference if someone used Technical Grade D-Limonene and Technical Grade Calcium Hydroxide on a Q21Q21 Tek for MHRB.

I have browsed the threads and found no info on the use of Tech-grade materials. Food grade materials are not available in SWIM's area.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Quote:
Chemical Grade Definitions from Highest to Lowest Purity.

1. A.C.S.
A chemical grade of highest purity and meets or exceeds purity standards set by American Chemical Society (ACS).

2. Reagent
High purity generally equal to A.C.S. grade and suitable for use in many laboratory and analytical applications.

3. U.S.P.
A chemical grade of sufficient purity to meet or exceed requirements of the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP); acceptable for food, drug, or medicinal use; may be used for most laboratory purposes.

4. N.F.
A grade of sufficient purity to meet or exceed requirements of the National Formulary (NF).

5. Lab
A chemical grade of relatively high quality with exact levels of impurities unknown; usually pure enough for educational applications. Not pure enough to be offered for food, drug, or medicinal use of any kind.

6. Purified
Also called pure or practical grade, and indicates good quality chemicals meeting no official standard; can be used in most cases for educational applications. Not pure enough to be offered for food, drug, or medicinal use of any kind.

7. Technical
Good quality chemical grade used for commercial and industrial purposes. Not pure enough to be offered for food, drug, or medicinal use of any kind.

According to this, it looks unsafe. Probably tech-grade calcium hydroxide is not a big problem when it comes to basifying, but limonene... if limo pulls the Ca(OH)2 impurities or leaves other stuff behind, that might be a problem. Performing a couple washes of the final product would be desirable, or re-X with clean naphtha, which takes you back to start.

But I'm very picky with chemical products. I am only familiar with USP compliant solvents... any chemist in the audience?

Excellent information. I guess SWIM will keep the tech-grade D-Limo for cleaning around the house instead. Looks like he has no choice but to use a different extraction method.

You saved him a lot of problems. he says; Many thanks!

This is what made him think it was purer.

If something is "food safe" doesn't mean you can ingest it and vice versa for "tech grade".

Find the manufacture of your product and ask him for MSDS. Attach it here.

In the case of Florida Chemical, you can easily use "tech grade" limonene.

Do an acetone wash at the end and you're golden.
