So after searching i decided the best thing to do is simply flip the lid upside down, no leaking no seal perfect!

However before that i used aluminum foil. Well when i took it off today the foil was crusty and looked like it had been eaten away a tiny bit.

I read that lye can react with aluminum and water to form some compounds. Would these transfer to the Naphtha?

I wouldnt think so and would assume they would stay in the lye/water solution but wanted to be sure.

Also i dissolved the crazy sticky glue that was on the sticker on the lid. I scraped all i could off but some was absorbed by the lye/naphtha. Its such a small amount i dont think it would matter, right?

Either way now i know that im using Glass because hdpe2 could have plasticizers (i keep the jar inside a cut up milk jug in case it shatters). And im flipping the lid to avoid any rubber contamination.

Anyone with some chem knowledge please reassure me that i wont be vaping aluminum hydroxide or something~!

Ive reused Ball mason jars quite a bit, they hold up very well.

I think better mix in round motions with a wood spoon or stainless steel object (careful with spills), and put the lid later but avoiding the solution touching the lid.

When you have separated the solvent and have it in a container with only solvent and no lye, you can use alu foil and then close with some lid, so that way the solvent wont come in contact and dissolve the rubber. Dont use it if it has lye because lye reacts with aluminium and creates explosive hydrogen gas

Ball/ker mason jars seem to have BPA in their lids, not good idea.

There are some jars with just stainless steel top that may not close so perfect but enough to reduce evaporation...

Damnit well after reading that thread and the links apparently theres bpa on the top of the lid (lol or was).

Im guessing its absorbed now in the naphtha? And assuming my naphtha did dissolve it that means that the lid is now BPA free right? so for all future extractions i should be good?

Sorry let me rephrase myself, do NOT use aluminium when there is still lye involved..

Alu foil does not react with naphtha or the other typical solvents we use but it DOES strongly react with most acids and bases like lye, creating hydrogen gas which can mean an expplosion. So only use alu foil below the lid if its the freeze container with only naphtha, dont use it if there's lye involved.

As for BPA, yeah part of it will probably be in naphtha, part of it will probably be still in the lid. The lid is NOT safe to use in future extractions. As I said, better stir in round motions and not let the lid touch the basified mix nor solvent.

Read the thread I linked above it explains how one could potentially remove phthalates and other plastic compounds. Either throw it away or be sure to do quite a few clean up steps in your spice before consuming it.

Seems like finding an appropriate container is actually pretty hard :/ glass is too brittle, plastic will leach, so is there an ideal container you would recommend(and where to get it)?

I was looking online but pyrex containers 1L+ with a glass stopper seem to be pretty expensive. Surely there is another way, really i could make do with a better lid and just keep my jar in my milk jug to be safe.


PS. Found these all seem too cheap? Anyways would one of these be the perfect vessel ? Pyrex with a ground stopper.

In what kind of container does your solvent come?
Mine comes in clear plastic bottles of 1 liter, and this will be 100% resistant to the solvent used since it need to be stored in those bottles.

But why is glass too brittle? Are you gonna toss it around

No from what others have posted high basic solutions (lye) can etch glass and weaken it eventually causing it to shatter. I keep the jar in a milk jug though in case it does.

My solvent comes in a metal container which would cause difficulties in drawing up the naphtha for freeze perc.

So im back to glass/pyrex except i need a lid without BPA (mason jar lids). Until i get a better container, il follow endlessness' suggestion and stir with a wooden spoon as opposed to rolling it end over end (preferred method).

But for future extractions i would love to get some better glassware i wouldnt worry about shattering/leaching.

PS. MMmmmmmm just got my first pull smells like potent flowers. Didnt expect spice to smell this good or strong.
