Has anyone here ever tried clear tomato soup or Consomme? While eating this delicious soup, an idea hit me over the head: One could follow the basic recipe for creating a clear soup, except replace all those tasty vegetables with bark, and end up with an acidified solution that is much lighter in color, if not nearly clear, that is ready to defat or basify. I then did a little research and found that shamans actually do use egg whites to remove tannins from their ayahuasca brews, and that's when I knew I was on to something . . .

If tomato soup can look like this, why cant our spiced/acid water look the same?
I guess the tek would go something like this: once you have simmered your bark in your acidic solution forming an ionic bond between your acid and alkaloid, rendering it water soluable, and you have filtered out the solid particles, you simply add an undetermined amount of eggwhites into your solution and stir it while bringing it back up to a boil. Once, all the now dark eggwhites have "cooked" and risen to the top of your solution, you simply filter the solution one more time through a few layers of cheese cloth or a clean t-shirt. (paper filter is over-doing it here and will take a long time)
What you should be left with is a solution with the same low ph and alkaloid content as you started with, but with much less of the dark tannins found in the bark which make our alkaloids ugly and harsh tasting. I am going to run a small scale experiment on this once my bark (woof woof) arrives. I realize that the devil's in the details and seeing is believing, but does anyone have any thoughts to share before i waste my time and my poor puppy gets laryngitis?
