So I completed an extraction, I used the DMT Handbook, and I'm pretty sure I got everything right except I left the DMT outside for a while and some of it melted a little bit most of it seemed to be O.K. though.

My problem is, when I take a big toke it's too harsh on my throat and hard to hold down and I kinda lose my voice for a while, and I can't break through.

The DMT look's all good, It's a yellow colour with a bit of an orange tinge, and it smells like most people describe.

So I'm trying to track down where/what wrong, like I said I'm almost certain I did everything right so could it be that my naptha has impurities in it?

I brought a 20lt container of it cause it's alot cheaper than the zippo stuff and I thought it would be purer.

Is there a way to wash the spice with acetone or something?

hey man, if you got the dmt handbook there are ways already in there to purify your spice. imo if its yellow/orange id clean it up a bit. it doesnt mean its gonna be any less harsh although id have thought it might be a lil less as itl be purer.
it could also be your smoking/vaping technique used if the spice is burnt with the lighter it will be very harsh and doesnt have much effect, the spice needs to be vaporised using the heat of the flame and not the flame itself.
the dmt handbook should already have all the info youl ever need in it so have another lil look through that for purifying an smoking teks or just check about on this forum as theres already loads of threads that are to do with your same issues.
do not use acetone to clean your spice, it wont work for what you want it for.

I actually use IPA or acetone to clean up my spice on occasion - redissolve in IPA or acetone (anhydrous), filter, evap..
I agree that if you have orange spice you might want to clean it some more

However if this is just plant oils the the harshness is probably coming from your smoking tek. Invest in a vaporizer! GVG is the best but there are working alternatives such as the machine (look it up in the wiki) or others. dmt vapor is not harsh at all and you will know almost instantly that it's working when you hit it.

Did you do an evaporation test of the naptha? I would start there to be safe, but most often what you describe comes from burning the spice.

This sounds like a smoking technique thing to me.

Even with the cleanest of spice, if you heat it too much it can burn your throat due to the temperature. Even with pure white spice in my vapor genie, heating too much produces uncomfortable results. Dirty waxy spice at the correct temperature can be smooth as silk.

It may be my smoking tech that's the problem. Last time I tried I used a 1.5lt bottle with a cone piece stuck in the side with about 5 gauze's in it, I filled it up with smoke then waited about 10 seconds, I figured that would be sufficient to cool the smoke? And I used a jet lighter, I lit pretty close to the spice cause I wanted to make sure all of it melted.

And I do have a vaporizer it's a VaporDaddy, so I might try that next time.

I've put a jar of the naptha outside to evap, and I've ordered some ISA so I can clean it (I was needing some anyway for a Salvia extraction)

O.k. so I did an evap test on the naphtha and there was only a tiny bit of waxy residue leftover.

After this I did an internet search and found the MSDS sheet for it and it contains;

Heptane and Isomers 32-36
Cyclohexane 25-27
n-hexane 15-20
Methyl Cyclohexane <10

You guy's will probably call me crazy for not checking first but I was pretty desperate and the guy i got it off told me it was 100% White Spirit which he said was naptha.

Is it possible to clean these contaminants? I've got about 2 grams of spice and I don't want to throw it away lol.

Heh heh... I've been reading these boards last night and all of today and have learned a lot by seeing all the mistakes people have made. It has also become obvious to me that there are many people who have never used glass pipes to smoke certain crystalline substances which are looked down upon by the government. These substances also use the heat of the flame rather than the flame to turn them into a vapor in glass "oil pipes". You can also make bongs by taking a pop or water bottle and making an attachment that is run in through the side of the bottle and attached to the stem of an oil pipe. All I can tell you, if you don't want to go to the expense or can't afford the vaporizers is to get an oil pipe and learn how to smoke it properly. Put your crystal into the globe-shaped bowl of the pipe. Put it to your lips. Take a lit lighter and hold it near, but NOT touching the glass of the pipe. The crystal of DMT or whatever should melt once it is hot enough and then turn into a vapor. Once it has turned into a vapor, inhale slowly through the stem of the pipe, rocking the melted dmt from side to side, and pulling away the lighter when you can't take anymore of the vapor into your lungs and hold it there. Repeat if necessary.

It might take a bit of time to get the hang of it, but once you learn the proper distance to hold the flame from the pipe and not to just hold it up against the glass without moving the liquefied material so that it burns, you will be fine. You might even want to make it a game to see how big a hit you can get. Hope this helps a bit. OH...and if all else fails, you can always use the old standby of a small sheet of aluminum foil, with the crystal on the dull side. You find a tube from a pen or whatever and then hold your lighter beneath the crystal on the foil and then as the vapor starts to rise, you inhale and follow the liquid down the foil so as to make sure you are getting all the vapor. It just takes a little creativity and you can make do until you can afford a more expensive means of delivery. And DON'T use one of those torch lighters when smoking using these methods. They are too hot and you can see your beautiful crystal turned into a big cloud and a burn mark before you get a chance to taste it. Torches are for cleaning the pipes. :-)

Do you get a metallic taste in your mouth? I notice that when I vape too hot.

Well, I got some white/off-white spice in an extraction and I thought I had totally screwed it up because to me it was very harsh. But now I'm seeing that I perhaps should have done a recrystallization on it or stuck to trying to smoke it through a bong sandwiched in some marijuana, since that wasn't quite as harsh for me. I thought I had totally screwed things up but the more I read and the more I talk to people who know about it, I realize that a lot of people have had the same coughing and stink experience with their spice that I did. It was more like a burning plastic smell. And I can't really say how it tasted to me. Not metallic. It was just some heavy stuff that made my lungs cough it right up, even though with the weed in a bong it was easier to get enough of a dose into me to have some effects. It'll just take some practice, I think, to smoke this stuff correctly.
