So I've been hanging around the nexus for a while, so I thought I would make an account and jump right in! Very happy

SWIM has been wanting to try LSD for a long while, but couldn't find it anywhere, so SWIM decided to try a DMT extraction. Why go to the bother of finding a seller, and then with all the risk of a bad product etc. when SWIM could get such an extraordinary substance from nature so cheaply?

Anyway, SWIM is doing a debut extraction now, a simple STB using naphtha and MHRB powder. The extractions are being performed in a pint vinegar bottle. SWIM was very thorough with cleaning the bottle before use, conscious that the NaOH soln. could liberate any residue left in the bottle. The basification of the MHRB went swimmingly, however during the naphtha extraction there is a VERY strong acetic acid smell, the kind that makes your head a little hot and your eyes and mouth water. Crying or very sad

SWIM was just wondering what can be done to dissipate/mask this smell quicker, mainly aimed at folks who use acetic acid in extractions.

p.s I'll think more carefully about a vessel next time...

what is the bottle made of? is there a triangle with a number on the bottom?

naphtha + certain types of plastic = no good! Also strong NaOH solutions with certain types of plastic could potentialy be a bad combo..

Weird thing you say, though, because acetic acid would all be neutralized by the NaOH, so there shouldnt be smell of it left.. In any case, next time I guess better use some strong glass container (Be careful when mixing NaOH with water in the container, be sure to keep mixing so heat doesnt accumulate during the dissolution and breaks the glass) or some clean HDPE container (I dont recommend though, I always preffer glass due to potential plasticizers in any plastic material, check health and safety section for a thread on phthalates/plasticizers I made)

Welcome to the Forum btw.. feel free to write an intro essay Very happy And cool cd, from your avatar Very happy

Avoiding plastics as much as possible at the moment, so it is a glass bottle.

During basification the agitation was only brief, so none of the mix got very far up the bottle, and not on to the lid, however that's not the case now, as agitation was higher during the pull, so the smell must be coming from the plastic lid (maybe). Vinegar bottles have been used by others, with no smell to report, so maybe it's down to lazy washing.

True, it should be neutralized and then some, but the smell is still defiantly that of acetic acid. Or maybe it's acetic anhydride??

Thanks for the warm welcome and the quick reply! Very happy

What's the deal on the nexus with SWIM, FOAF and subjective pronouns?

No need to use SWIM if you dont want. Yeah I bet its small traces of vinegar in the cap where the basified mix didnt reach.. Nothing to worry about, except the fact you might be bothered by the smell.. I would be more worried about your plastic and naphtha... Be well!
