Ive been curious about amanita's for a long time, mostly since they grow throughougt the world, and in my local area, and just wanted to experience a local entheogen.

Well my friend apparently found a field of amanitas, and harvested a bunch of them.

He took them home and to dry them he roasted them over the fire, not in the fire, but they sat ontop of the fireplace (which is metal, so gets pretty hot) and dried out..

Im just wondering, ive heard amanitas are fairly heat tolerant, do you guys think that drying over the fireplace could have any negative effects on the actives?? Or should they be good to eat?

Thanks any help is most appreciated

too much heat will cook off the actives, but ibotenic gets converted to muscimol at 170-175º so they are fairly heat tolerant..
supposedly stockings come from drying amanitas in socks over the fireplace, so i imagine it would work out.

but as long as they look pretty much the same as they did before only shriveled up and dry, they should be good.
if they have brown-black burn marks then you might have overdone it.
only real way to know for sure is to try em Smile

Harmalosa, i hope you identified the amanitas properly before drying them ? Just making sure... Theres lots of amanita related deaths in my home country. It would not be cool if you died from a misindentified mushroom.

Thanks very much for the replies, appreciated!

They are dried over the fire but there is no visible burn or scorch marks, they look nice.

Yes these are properly identified a. muscaria, the folks at mycotopia identified them. No it would not be cool to die from a misidentified mushroom!

People who can't identify a fly agaric should not pick mushrooms at all.

Here is a recipe that I found, haven't tried it but it sounds good. You have to experiment with dosage since it varies a lot between the mushrooms.

"This method of cooking Fly Agaric helps to convert ibotenic acid and muscarine, into muscimole (the main visionary component of the medicine). By cooking it this way, you remove most if not all of the unpleasant side effects, and create a stronger visionary experience.

1. Make sure the cap to stem ratio is about 3:1

2. If working with wet mushrooms, dry the mushrooms out in the sun or on a dry screen on the lowest setting of an oven, with the door slightly open. If using the oven, check regularly as it will only take an hour at the most.

3. Render into a power using a coffee grinder, spice mill, etc.

4. Put a pot of water over heat/flame.

5. Bring the water to 180-190F/82-87C degrees. This is VERY important. Too hot and it will destroy the visionary components, too cold and not enough of the toxins will get converted.

6. Once you’ve reached around 190F/87C degrees, place in the powdered contents.

7. Stir regularly and watch the temperature constantly. If the water starts to simmer, it means that the temperature is at least 212F/100C degrees and too hot.

8. It’s recommended to let it steep in the hot water for a half an hour to an hour, but sometimes I’ll let it cook longer than that. But once enough time has past, remove from the heat, let it cool, and the medicine is ready for ceremony."
Everything I write as Tordyveln is made up. I lie all the time.

Well the fly agaric is pretty simple to identify, and in my area, this is the only species that grows in my area (of amanita) and I got it checked out by people on mycotopia, so ive done my homework, dont worry about meCool
