Mama in Peruvian as well as Bolivia culture has a specific connotation to the way they relate to plants and spirits. Papa is also used for male spirits, but the concept is based on the idea that each plantas including maize and potato, is a mama, kinda like a mother goddess. Mama patato, mama maize. These are terms of significance to them religiously.
People use the term mama aya because they hear it called that but rarely understand why it's called a mama. I prefer to establish my own relationship dynamics. Though a appreciate their cultural view, changa I've felt is in a league of it's own and allows us to create our own unique cultural relationship with these plants.
