Hello guys, OK, so mushroom season came and went, and I picked loads. But then I ate them all. Well, me and my friends/girlfriend did anyway. However, I will soon be traversing to the Dam, where Magic Truffles are on offer! I have plenty of experience with mushrooms, but none whatsoever with these little truffles. So, does anyone know wheich variety are the best (strongest, most pleasant, least nausea), or does it not really matter? Also, is there any difference between Caps and Truffles in terms of effects? Also, any top tips on preparation? (I just eat mushrooms dried or raw straight up, does the same go for truffles?) Peas. "Mama matrix most mysterious." James Joyce

There's not many varieties of psilocybe mushrooms that produce truffles (sclerotia). As far as I know, only Ps. Atlantis, Ps. Mexicana and Ps. Tampanensis. I have not tried all of them so I cannot tell by experience, but I remember reading that Atlantis is slightly more potent. Consumption is easy. You might try and make a tea with them, but eating them fresh, chewing them thoroughly and washing them down with some juice (I like mango) works perfect, and they are relatively pleasant to eat, like nuts with a somewhat soily flavor. I'm not a particular fan of the taste myself, but that's because in my first time I ate a second mouthful when my taste buds were tingling with the effects of the first, and those extra-tasty bits were hard to chew and gulp. But my girlfriend likes them In any case, that first truffle snack brought a very pleasant, invigorating experience. Regarding potency and dosage, I'm just copying this from Erowid. It fits what I've experienced myself. Quote:Sclerotia is roughly 70% water by weight while mushrooms are around 90% water. Dry sclerotia is 2/3 as potent as dry cubensis fruits, while fresh sclerotia is twice as potent as fresh cubensis. This is due to the fact that sclerotia contain 3 times more dry matter per quantity of fresh material. And about nausea, I only had once. But I suspect that the batch was not too fresh. I my experience with both truffles and mushrooms, the truffles are the same only they have a much cleaner feel to them. Especially if you make a tea out of them. I have only tried the P. Atlantis, and I thought they were fantastic. Definitely good stuff. If they weren't so expensive I'd eat them more often, especially since I think they're legal where I live. I should probably just start growing them.

There are at least 12 variety´s on the market, based on p.atlantis, mexicana, pajateros and tampanensis. Some of them are quite weak, but there are stronger variety´s as well. Basically, there is no major difference between shrooms and sclerotia. Every shroom has a bit of it´s own character, so that aplies to sclerotia as well.
I would go for white diamonds, royal beluga or cosmic connectors. Those are extremely close to copelandia cyanensis, the famous 'hawaians'.

Many thanks for the replies, guys. Xemnas...is it Holland where you live? How expensive are we talking here? If not Holland, does anyone know how much they are in the Dam, in a headshop for example? And thanks Poly, I will definately seek those out. From what I remember (when they were legal here) the Hawaiians are exactly what Im after. They make steam come out your ears Thanks again "Mama matrix most mysterious." James Joyce

They are in between 15 and 20 euro´s a box. Although the labels on the boxes claim that one box contains two doses, i would say that one box on average contains one dose.

^ Yes, the packs I find around here in local smartshops range from 15 to 19 euros for 15 grams of fresh sclerotia. That can be a reasonably strong dose (roughly equivalent to almost 3 grams of dry cubensis) but doesn't seem enough for two. Unless we're talking about two threshold doses for beginners, or very small body mass. "The Menu is Not The Meal." - Alan Watts

Dear god! That's a hefty price tag indeed... If it wasnt for a special occasion, I may reconsider buying them at all! But buy them we will. A whole box each, of course. "Mama matrix most mysterious." James Joyce

If they are fresh and you already have experience with mushrooms, I would suggest eating more than just 15 grams of the fresh sclerotia. A nice light to medium trip for me was about 20 grams of fresh P. Atlantis truffles (supposedly the strongest type) and I'm not a very big guy either. Of course it all depends on what you're set/setting is and how deep of a trip you're going for. I don't live in Holland, and I'm actually not sure if they're legal where I live, but I know I am able to order them online and in bulk they are not too bad of a price. If I had more money to burn I definitely would buy them far more often. I highly recommend them. They seem alot friendlier than normal mushrooms in general, but maybe that's just me. Like polytrip said, every 'shroom has a bit of it's own character. Hope you have fun in The 'Dam.

If you grow Jalisco's (Mexicana) you can harvest mushrooms growing just like cubensis, then save the mycelium mass for a few months in a sealed container (dark cool place) then harvest a decent amount of sclerota.
I would never buy mushrooms or sclerotia, so much more satisfying to grow & consume your own.
