Could be your phalaris has gramine, yes..
Also, pH 9 with sodium bicarb is not high enough base, use calcium hydroxide in a dry tek or sodium hydroxide in a wet tek . Afterwards, try recrystallizing your product with naphtha, see if you can get anything near crystals, maybe pre-evaping and then with freeze precipitating.
If you bioassay, start with very very low doses and dont continue usage if you feel anything wrong. Ideally get it analysed, or start growing some phalaris from seed, with known good alkaloid profile. Good luck
