This is a procedure I wrote for myself and friends from the extraction procedures on Erowid. I tried it on a few occasions, the first went very well with large white crystals, the second ended with gunky red goo (which was smoked anyway...), and the third was tossed due to terrible contamination. I stopped others from trying it due to my uncertainties. I've been reading some of the teks here and haven't seen huge differences from my procedure. I suspect that the accuracy of my ph meter degraded during or between extractions. Perhaps I should use a known ratio of lye/muriatic acid to water instead of measuring myself? Any other help?

I have photos from the second extraction (I think) and will post those if it'll help diagnose my problems. Thanks for the help.


The process described below is illegal in many countries including the United States.

I) Before you begin there are a few important things to do:
a) Ensure Naptha does not react with any jar seal, the turkey baster, or eye dropper.
b) Wash all your jars and filtration beaker in a dishwasher or with hot water and soap. Rinse thoroughly with distilled water. Ideally take care to wash all of your glass immediately after use, rinse with distilled water, and rinse again before use.
II) Pulverize the root bark, and place in a quart jar
a) I recommend using a blender with a small amount of distilled water in it, to keep down the dust. Do a small amount of bark at a time to fully shred it.

III) Acidify water to pH 2
a) Fill the other quart jar with distilled water and less than a capful of muriatic acid. Always add acid into water.
b) Adjust acid/water mix until pH ~2
IV) Pour the acidified water over the shredded root bark
a) Barely cover the root bark with water, less liquid you makes everything faster and easier.
V) Shake vigorously and repeatedly over a week.

VI) Step VI is OPTIONAL: Heat the mixture
a) This helps the DMT move from plant material into our acidified water.
b) Use a double boiler, do not allow the DMT mixture to evaporate, keep the jar lid loosely on, and keep temperature below 122 oF
c) If you used muriatic acid heat for about a half hour, other acids need to be heated for much longer, often over night.
d) Allow to cool slowly to room temperature
VII) Vacuum filtrate the mixture, and pour the filtered solution into your large pickle jar
a) Don’t bother removing the plant material from the jar on the first two filtrations
VIII) Repeat Steps III to VII twice more.
a) Discard the plant material after the last filtration

IX) OPTIONAL: Defatting process: See Step 6 in http://www.erowid.org/ch..._extraction_guide1.shtml
a) I do not do this, and the general internet knowledge is that defatting is unnecessary for mimosa hostilis root bark
b) It does make your final product cleaner and purer. Being healthy is never bad.
X) Basify water to pH 12
a) Do this in a quart jar. Don’t add lye directly, localized pH spikes destroys the alkaloids we want.
XI) Add basified water to the DMT liquid until it reaches pH 9 to 10, and mix thoroughly.
a) Do this slowly, the liquid will turn a dark grey as the alkaloids are converted to freebase.
b) Pressure may build up, and the jar may heat. Vent often and cool to room temperature before continuing.

XII) Add an equal part Naptha to the basified DMT solution and mix
a) Mix by slowly rolling the solution end over end until thoroughly mixed
b) Ultimately this will separate into two layers with an emulsion in between. The emulsion can take up to a few days to completely separate. Careful and slow mixing will minimize the emulsion.
c) The naptha (a non-polar solvent) rises to the top and contains the DMT freebase. The water and other gunk fall to the bottom. The emulsion contains some of both.

XIII) Wait until the emulsion has settled.
a) If your emulsion will not go away see Step 9 in http://www.erowid.org/ch..._extraction_guide1.shtml
Note: This emulsion can and should settle more than this. However removing Naptha now for the first evaporations is fine and saves time. Take extra care to avoid the emulsion.

XIV) Remove the Naptha (top layer) and put in evaporating dish
a) Use the turkey baster and eye dropper to remove the naptha
b) Do not get any of the emulsion or other layer into your evaporation dish. You do not want to inhale it.
c) A fan helps the naptha dissolve faster
XV) Repeat Steps XII to XIV twice more.

XVI) Wait, and scrape with a razor and spread over a note card
a) Chop and make sure everything is fully dry
b) Your crystals should smell like plastic or a petroleum product.
Note: The first extraction I performed yielded distinct clear crystals, the second left a dark sludge. Purity differed, however both smelled distinctly of petroleum.
