Let's say SWIM had lost a 20g or so to Rhizopus, due to improper drying techniques. Would it be safe to perform ethanol extraction? SWIM understands that this mold is only dangerous if aloud to sporulate within the body. SWIM doesn't believe that the mold or spores could survive ethanol extraction. The ultimate goal of the extraction is to yield crystalline psilocybe.

The cubes are already soaking in ethanol, but SWIM wants to make sure that there's no toxins that would end up in the final product.

do an a/b extraction

one of the perks of extractions, biological contaminants aren't really a factor. strong base followed by nonpolar solvent extraction...yeah...don't worry about it. in the end, you'll pull alkaloids, not mold/spores (the latter will likely be in a thin layer between the aqueous and nonpolar phases)

...unless the Rhizopus fungus has some toxic alkaloids in its mycelium. Depending on the nature of these alkaloids, they may come along with the mushrooms alkaloids in an A/B extraction.

But yeah, it is very unlikely, SWIM's FOAF would go ahead, do the extraction and try the product.

If you use a good quality filter paper, the spores will be filtered out for sure. The biological organisms won't survive being in the solvents and the pH swing from low to high will also kill most microorganisms.

Some microorganisms produce extremely toxic alkaloids. That’s what I’d be afraid of. The alkaloids from the microorganisms could make it through the process, and if toxic, could possibly kill you. For that reason, make sure you can crystallize and identify the alkaloids your attempting to extract.

I'd recommend throwing them out. Your health is more important than anything else.

has anyone ever attempted an A/B extraction with mushrooms? it would be interesting to get some measures. i would guess that the process won't be the same as with mimosa or would it? which solvent would be used to pull?

Very similar indeed, yet one has to be more careful with pH extremes (pH of 4 is more than enough for acid extraction, whereas pH>11 should be avoided for the basification step). The choice of non-polar solvent is also critical; naphtha wouldn't work very well and freebased psilocin is water soluble (xlogP=1.6). DCM reportedly would work fine, while SWIM's FOAF has used isobutanol for the said purposes success recently.

could one also do an STB with it?

Apparently Rhizopus oryzae contains an ergot alkaloid called agroclavine, and agroclavine is toxic. So SWIM'll be trashing the batch.
