Nice...that large casing is worth the extra time. I don't know why everyone doesn't do it like this.

Very nice dick harvest. I am certainly envious!Cool

Thanks guys! This is a bigger tub than I've used before and I was distracted by guests when I made up the bulk sub... So it only ended up being 2.5 inches thick. I usually go for 4 inches, so I'm curious to see what the second flush comes in at.

Very very nice!

What are those while puffy cottonball looking things? Is that another kind of fungi (because they are so symmetrical in the box from each other)?

Its just some cotton wool in the holes of the terrarium to stop little bists of dust and contams getting in, but letting the air to flow.

Wow!! Thanks for all the interest, guys!

Ok, here are the specifics.

Spawned 7 quart jars of colonised Rye Berry Seed to 1 gallon water/1 brick coconut coir/1 quart vermiculite/1 quart coffee grounds/1 cup gypsum. I also threw in a little bit of ORMUS to see if it helped.

The setup is a monotub: plastic tub with 6 holes in it, all loosely plugged with polyfill. After spawning to the tub, I put the whole tub in a garbage bag and let the bulk sub colonise. After full colonisation, I waited 1 week for it to consolidate, then placed into fruiting. I didn't use a casing layer, cause cubes don't need them.

This is the beautiful thing about monotubs, they are their own fruiting chamber. Humidity is maintained by the evaporation of water from the sub. So placing into fruiting means I took the garbage bag off the tub, turned on a fan in the closet, and placed a daylight CFL (compact fluorescent light) on a 12/12 hour cycle. I used an analog hygrometer inside to watch the rh and made adjustments to the amount of polyfill in the holes to keep a 90% rh while getting as much fresh air exchange as possible.

After I harvested that flush I dunked the sub in spring water for 5 hours then placed back into fruiting conditions. The second flush is coming along nicely and I will post pics of it when it is ready!

very yummy grow..mmm..nom nom nomm
thats a pretty nice yield indeed
when you bioassay them, report back on the potency if u could. PE's are rumored to be the strongest cubes, so another subjective opinion would be interesting in comparison to other strainsSmile

yea thats wat makes monotubs waay better than cakes. they're also prettier to look at, and easy to growSmile

Yeah PE is about 2x the potency of a normal strain due to it being a mutation. Another super potent one is Oak Ridge, a sub-cubensis, that is about 2x a normal cube as well.

I have already bio-assayed PE, even did a mushroom dieta with the PE I had from my first bulk grow ever. That's right guys! You can shamanically diet mushrooms, cactus, whatever!

With PE a full-on experience is at most 2-2.5 grams.

I'd really like to have a look at this point here. I'd hate to be the bearer of bad news but large casing's can be very deceiving. It seems like the extra time and material yields more mushrooms but that's just as it seems.

Yes, more mushrooms grow at once, but it is time consuming and material wasteful, in SWIM's experience.

To show evidence for this, one could examine the amount of material put in and compare that with the yield output.

If the material input and yield output ratio is better than smaller casing's, then it would be best to use larger casings (best here refers to getting more yield for your material).

If the material input and yield output ratio is worse, then using more small casing's would be best for getting more out of the material.

This large casing tek above compared with a small casing tek will give the example.

1 cup brown rice, 2 cups vermiculite and 1 cup water (for a total of 4 cups) yielded 18 dry grams on first flush. And 10 grams dry second flush.

The tek above has 4 cups vermiculite, 1 brick coconut coir (at least 5 cups probably way more), 4 cups coffee grounds, 1 cup gypsum, 16 cups of water and 28 cups of rye berry seed. (A total of 58 cups). Yielded 118 grams dry first flush. That sounds good but look at the math.

58/4 = 14.5

That means the larger casing should yield 14.5 times as much as the smaller one just to break even with it.

14.5 times 18 grams (first flush) = 261

Not even close to 118.

Now, here are a few exceptions to this evidence.

1. The smaller casing has less nutrients so it may be less potent.

2. The smaller casing was a different strain, which is a factor not accounted for. A simple experiment using the same strain would be nice. SWIM believes the evidence would be the same.

3. Larger casing's are convenient because they give a bunch at once. Though this can be countered by the use of more small casing's, which is rather easy to do, easier in SWIM's opinion.

4. The smaller casing used a casing layer while the larger one above did not. This helped a more even pin set. The picture below is the first flush (plus one very cool looking mushroom cap Smile). You will notice that the pin set is very even and that every part of the casing is fruiting. The pictures of the above tek show spots were no mushrooms are growing. That could be why it didn't yield so well.

Final Conclusion:

Larger casing's simply are harder to maintain so the yield is often much more poor. SWIM isn't saying they are harder to maintain as in take care of, just harder to make sure every part of the casing has the optimum conditions for fruiting. Thus more wasteful of material. Smaller casing's are easier to ensure an even pin set and that the fruiting occurs everywhere over the casing.

This is simply SWIM's experience and understanding. SWIM is not trying to be controversial or competitive, just wants to clarify the facts so that everyone in the future can benefit.

If anyone has other experiences that conflict with SWIM's then please post that, more info will really help clarify this issue.

Regards,

Damiana

Excellent idea! I was wondering the same thing. In the pics it looks like massive bacterial growth, but the cotton makes sense. I wonder if filter patches would work just as well... Just a thought.

Anyhow. Gorgeous flush! 119 DRY grams in one flush? seriously? That's fucking insane! Mind blowing actually. I haven't read your tek yet, but am about to for sure! Looking forward to hearing about 2nd / 3rd flushes...

Nice work Shaggy Shaman!

@ Damiana: 1. You are correct in your assertion that BRF is more bio-efficient than CCVG.
2. The big bare spot is there because SWIM had already started harvesting before he remembered to take a picture.
3. In your comparison, you counted multiple flushes in your example to only the ONE flush of mine. When All flushes come in on this is when we should do the math.
4. A properly done monotub is almost set and forget, providing it's own humidity. A smaller casing would need a separate fruiting chamber/martha setup. Unless it is just a smaller monotub?
5. Pin set is not a determining factor in total weight. SWIM has had a tub that was pretty much ONLY side pins produce 11 oz or so. You just end up with fewer/larger fruit. The mycelium move the nutrients to the fruit wherever the fruit may be.
6. SWIM likes not having to do a casing layer. Makes it easier to dunk and get back into fruiting.

Interesting take on it though. Thanks for the analysis. I will post pics tomorrow of SWIM's second flush in progress.
