Having a lot of trouble sourcing hardwood chips for my azure garden... any clever tips? BBQ chips are too expensive and I have tried finding someone to chip maple logs from my chalet, but for some reason it is proving excessively difficult... I was going to propose renting or borrowing a wood chipper or just finding a log and going to town, but now I can't stop thinking about BBQ Cubensis

I dunno if you're in the US or what the price of this is, but what about looking into a woodchipper rental service? http://www.woodchipper.net/Wiki • Attitude • FAQThe Nexian • Nexus Research • The OHTIn New York, we wrote the legal number on our arms in marker...To call a lawyer if we were arrested. Woodchippers like I need cost around 20k and often need to be hooked up to a tractor or similar engine (this is what they tell me anyway. I am quite willing to buy, but I don't know where to go... This is going to sound pathetic, but I have been looking for almost 2 years!! I'm usually pretty resourceful too, but for some reason, this one's got me... Well, given you're in canada, that service is no good for you, but they do provide the chipper with or without tractor depending on your needs. Maybe there's some similar service up in your neck of the woods. Then again, maybe this service only makes sense in the United States of Gluttony . Does it need to be chips or can in be a bit finer? You can go to town on some logs with a chainsaw and eventually you create a ton on chips/sawdust. You lock the door, and throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me

Problem is when you cut with a chainsaw that thin, you waste more than you recoup, and you're still left with discs too large for the mycelium to colonize in any reasonable amount of time... The sawdust is usable, but you need about 10:1 chips/dust. More dust=more chance of contams (greater surface area and water retention...) its really not as simple as it should be!!
