SWIM tried doing a wash for the first time a few days ago. His yield from that extraction process was less than stellar, so he's wondering if maybe some of the spice is trapped in the wash? He used 100% bicarbonate and baked it for 3 hrs at 450F before using it. The wash was kept just in case, and a picture has been provided below. So the question is, could there be some spice in there, and if so, how can it be extracted easily? (It appears a small layer of naphtha has surfaced that hasn't been removed yet.) Thanks!

Good quality Syrian rue (Peganum harmala) for an incredible price!

The trick of the carbonate wash is speed
you get in and get out before any migration occurs

if you took a long while, then yes it's possible some could still be in there

basify with lye and let it migrate back into the solvent and repeat your process

Thanks for the suggestion, Wade. Could swim use Pickling Lime as well? He is in the middle of an extraction using lime, but the stuff in the picture was produced using lye.

No spice will migrate to the basic aqueous layer (the sodium carbonate solution), remember its the freebase and is very soluble in organic solvents. Don't use anything but sodium carbonate solutions for washes.
