I believe the reason it works for some and not others is down to the quality of spice used. I tried with a yellowish batch and had the outer crystal formation problem, the reason for this is probably due to the yellow DMT containing fats and oils that get supercooled in the butane and stop the DMT from disolving.
If you chose to try this method you'll have better results with white spice that has been ground down to a fine powder.
