It's said, that older cacti contain more alkaloids. How big is the difference between a 30cm and a 60cm cactus?

You mean a 30cm of an old cactus compared to a 30cm of a new cactus? For once, the older piece will be thicker which equals more biomass and possibly more alkaloids. I have never seen claims or analyses of % alkaloid content from old vs new sprouts of the same cactus (THIS is the question one must be asking).

There may be some empirical knowledge out there though....

just to note, if we're talking about the cact plaza, the 30cm cutting is way thinner, younger and lighter than the 60cm cutting.... get the 60cm one..

My 60cm cuttings had soft core, not woody at all. Like the 30cm cuttings from the same dutch vendor. I think both are not old, but grown fast.
I dont know about the differences in alkaloid content.

Are they really much thinner? Because 300cm cacti would cost only 99€ if I'd take the smaller cuttings....it would be 150€ if I'd go with the longer ones. So are the smaller cuttings more than half as thick?

The cuts i got (30cm and 60cm) were not different in diameter, and looked very much the same in every respect. They were all about 3 inch in diameter, tip to tip of the starshape.

interesting... I got the 60cm ones 3x, they were all more or less the same, and the only one 30cm cutting I got was def thinner and younger.. im not sure if it was half as thick but I remember thinking it wasnt worth it in terms of price after I got it. But maybe I just had bad luck....

So, 10 small cuttings = 6.5kg = 3.7 big cuttings

3.7x 23 Euro = 85 Euro
10 cuttings = 99 Euro

So the big cuttings are really the deal.

BTW, the 10x pack is really a mixed bag, ranging from very very thin to monstrously big cuttings.

I have noticed a big difference between 30 cm and 60cm cuttings.

The 30cm cuttings seem to have less alkaloids in them, also the 30cm cactus themselfs are less sticky.

So i suggest you go for the 60cm ones cause my findings have been that the 60cm have a higher percentage of yield.

Cheers,
V
