In digging through old threads, I found some debate about whether or not HDPE is safe for use with limonene.

The limonene I purchased came in HDPE plastic - should I transfer it into a glass vessel?

And is HDPE really safe to use during the extraction process?

I want to tread on the side of caution as much as possible. What would be most practical and safe? Thanks <3

HDPE will probably leach small amounts of plasticizers into the limonene, but if you are then removing alkaloidal bases from the limonene with an acid wash those plasticizers will stay in the limonene. This means only the traces of limonene which make their way into the acidic wash will contribute to any exposure to plasticizers. A trace within a trace.

I restrict use of HDPE in extractions to aqueous solutions only. All other solvents get glassware, or stainless steel.

“There is a way of manipulating matter and energy so as to produce what modern scientists call 'a field of force'. The field acts on the observer and puts him in a privileged position vis-à-vis the universe. From this position he has access to the realities which are ordinarily hidden from us by time and space, matter and energy. This is what we call the Great Work."

I store my "spent" soup in a pp5 'sealed' tub. It's also destined to be strained, re acidified and used for dye, I have some friends that have a tie dye business and I hate waste. I wouldn't trust any plastics for extraction purposes, most of the NPS we use the plasticizers will definitely leech into.
