Garden States - A Forum for Cultivating Ethnobotanical Plant Knowledge and CommunityGarden States is a not-for-profit initiative, designed to encourage community building around medicinal plants, research, and psychedelic culture. Get your hands dirty and learn how to grow and share ethnobotanical plants from the experts. Participate in citizen science and meet like-minded botanical folk from across Australia.
Our program is designed to explore relationships between humankind and plants, including gardening, conservation, sustainability, culture, art, altered states, spirituality, philosophy, psychedelic research, harm reduction and politics.
The conference will take place as an in-person event on Friday and Saturday, 3rd-4th December, 2021. On Sunday, 5th December, we’ll be hosting an informal community gathering in the afternoon, including an outdoor plant meet and a book swap for in-person attendees.
Garden States Keynote guests will include, but will in no way be limited to David Holmgren, Dr Margaret Ross, Bruce Pascoe, Janet Laurence, Dr Alison Pouliot, John Seed, Monica Barratt, and the legendary Keeper Trout. We’ll also provide additional streaming content on Sunday, 5th December from remote keynote presenters.
If you can’t make it along in person, you can still be part of the conference. For the first time, we’ll be operating as a hybrid online event, allowing people from across Australia and around the world to tune in. Online attendees will have access to the main stage live conference stream made up of keynote lectures and discussion panels. All attendees will also receive a copy of our renowned conference journal.
The in-person conference gathering will be composed of around thirty lectures, twelve workshops and five discussion panels that have been curated to help you along the journey to plant seeds for earth, body, and mind.

About EGAEntheogenesis Australis is a charitable, educational organisation established in 2004. We provide opportunities for critical thinking and knowledge sharing on ethnobotanical plants, fungi, nature, and sustainability. Through our conferences and workshops, we aim to celebrate the culture, art, politics and community around medicine plants in order to further the well-being of humankind and the planet.
As our last few EGA symposiums and events have sold out well in advance, and tickets are strictly limited, we highly recommend booking your Garden States tickets early. There are no single-day passes, although we do offer discounted tickets for First Nations people as well as concession & hardship tickets. Young adults need to attend with a guardian and have tickets purchased by a guardian on their behalf.
Garden States 2021 will offer much more than even our most enthusiastic ethnobotanically minded friends could have hoped. With that in mind, we hope to see you all at this extraordinary event and wish you, your family, and your communities all the best over the coming months.
