Syrian Rue seems to be one of the most underrated sources as it is available universally due to its Muslim cultural use.
From India it seems to be the easiest most reliable source.(I tried babol and that was a disaster)
Are there any brands/ types i should prefer or avoid ?

store brand rue seems pretty good. you can always try rueshop.com

Sadaf brand is the only one I've been able to find available at local markets. It has treated me well.  If you are ordering, I'll echo the recommendation for rueshop. They have great quality and prices, and their international shipping is very reliable.

actually for me store bought esphand is of substantially better quality that bought from rueshop. period.
better yields. less funky taste. cheaper too.

Someone i know has been able to successfully germinate esphand, so yes; good quality
