I am interested in OTC alkaloid extraction in the UK, particularly for cactus. It seems to be difficult to source a good non-polar solvent without buying it online and all the attendant electronic records. 'White Spirit' is readily available but stinks and contains gods knows what crude oil fractions. I found several sources for what seems to be clean naptha.
1. Lighter fuel - ronson etc. (expensive and should be subjected to a quick evap test to check for non-volatile impurities)
2. Coleman fuel - lead-free petrol-stove fuel. Can be found below standard retail price and evaporates cleanly.
3. Aspen 4 fuel - clean 4-stroke engine fuel for lawnmowers etc. Swedish and supposedly free of cyclic aromatics (nasty carcinogens). This is also recommended by some outdoor enthusiasts as a clean burning fuel for petrol stoves, which is where I discovered it.
4. Panel Wipe - a clean evaporating degreaser for car paint shops.
Panel Wipe seems to be the cheapest readily available naptha-like solvent.
Anyone else have any suggestions?
