Just wondering if anyone knows if one can keep this toad in a vivarium ? I've occasionaly seen them listed by amphibian and reptile dealers, but unfortunately without exception they state " not currently available" ( European based)

They need peace and quiet and space. Do you have a large living space inwhich to build a large, dope, dark and silent habitat for one AND a complete lack of social life? No parties! Sound proofing is cool, but even vibrations from people with a heavyu step...

I think it is technically illeagal to take one from their home--they only live in one place and if I recall they are protected/endangered (I might be wrong on that one.) If memory serves, to get one, you need to stealthily capture one in the wild.

Major karma involved in raising one of these. Do your research! I did mine, ages ago and decided to leave these delicate creatures, these sacred and beautiful animals well and alone, whilst seeking my bufotenin and 5meo elsewhere. IMO there is karma involved in merely aquiring plant matter from the amazon, taking it all the way across the world for your own purposes....with them toads my feelings are likewise....but they have a face, and not only contain active tryptamines, but a cereberal cortex to think and feel with, in a manner not so different from our own.

Just my thoughts. Again, do your research, don't trust people like me on forums. And don't they do better with a companion? If you get a female and a male, what do you do with the babies?

yeah..I say leave them be. They are wild animals and keeping them in a little aquarium is like keeping you in a little room for your life. Plants are different because they dont move around that way, and toads are not like dogs-you cant take them for walks etc..as long as you give a plant enough rootspace etc they thrive. I have also read that the toads do not produce as much venom in captivity.

I don't know if the OP meant it this way. But I would like to have one as a companion.
I wouldn't use it to harvest alkaloids, but just as a pet and a friend.
I know I will never get the chance to, so I won't even pursue it, plus I know I currently
would not be able to give it the environment it needs. But it would still be very cool to have one.

Yeah, thanks guys for the info, but spare me the "bunny hugging" morals if you wouldn't mind. I'm a responsible adult, who historicaly has displayed the utmost kindness to animlas, heck, I even carefully let go all the fish I catch.
Jamie, Where does it say in my OP that I need to extract venom? If I was hell bent on obtaining 5MeO, I'd find another way.

Somebody on here by the name of motiv311 said that they owned one of the toads once and would "milk" it's venom.

i have had a few bufo as pets they are great pets but dont let any old fool milk your toad they are super duper delicate more than most toads/frogs the only other frog/toad i ever owned more delicate were bicolor frogs

I used to keep two Bufo Alvuarius as pets. Hence, the Toadfreak. They are very interesting pets. I had a giant aquarium, cant remember the exact size but I spent well over 300 bucks on it. I had good lighting, I used soil I bought from a pet store with peat moss as they need to be able to hide. They seemed to live quite well actually I think the setup I had for them was certainly better than many pets have. Between the toads and the crickets it was lovely to sleep to the sound of chirps and ribbits. Contrary to what many people think you don't harm them at all to harvest venom, you can only harvest once a month.

Personally, I would be absolutely scared to death to ingest one of the most powerful psychoactive substances on the planet if it was harvested from a living being that I had taken out of its natural habitat to live in a small glass box. I don't care if the aquarium is the size of your entire living room, its still smaller than the desert.

Even if you do just intend to keep it as a pet and companion, I'd imagine you'd still be ingesting other psychedelics in the vicinity of the toad. Again, I'd be SCARED TO DEATH to take down a few rips out of my GVG just thinking about the fact that I ripped a living creature out of its home.

well considering that bufo alvarius lives in a very secluded small valley in on specific desert that dont need too much room to roam i had 2 and they were a decent sized tank were i built them a make shift habitat and had them for many many many years with them in great health
