I have a friend that swears up and down that you can extract Mescaline from cactus with using only xylene.... I really really doubt this and think he has just been eating cactus dust soaked in xylene he says he feels affects, but honestly I do not know if it is just a placebo or if he possibly ate enough cactus dust to break threshold. But all in all I would like to show him he is not truly extracting it and needs to add a lye or lime solution to break it down. But of course if I am wrong I would like to let him know but if he is wrong I would like to warn him of the possible damage he could be doing by ingesting the xylene soaked cactus dust.

Thank you very much in advance for all assistance.

Eating cactus dust soaked in xylene? So he just placed the cactus dust in the xylene and then evapped it all and took it? Sounds strange.

For the xylene to be able to absorb mescaline you need to have the mescaline available in a freebase form. Mescaline, when it is inside the cactus, is in a salt form, and a salt form of mescaline will not be absorbed by the xylene.

You make a freebase out of the mescaline-salt by basing it. So yes, you are right that you need to base the cactus to make the the mescaline move into the xylene.

Kind regards,

he still believes he has extracted it. and yea you hit his method right on the head he lets it soak like two weeks. but do you believe he could feel the effects of eating enough of the catcus after soaking it?
