Toluene Derivates for Easier Crystalization? Options

Hi,

If you use butylhydroxytoluene, will that work and in general, do you get better precipitation using toluene type stuff? I am using ether now but for the life of me I can't get a decent solution. Sad I am asking because toluene (and derivates?) dissolve more than DMT, so are less specific.

I been reading so much already and my head is spinning more from the information presented and the contradiction and apparent lack of a standard in extraction than from sniffing the ether. Confused Information overload.Shocked

Read the FAQ, and have patience, you'll get it soon with a bit of effort on your side Smile

How are you trying to precipitate the crystals from toluene or ether? Hopefully not freeze precipitation because that doesnt work, it only does for naphtha/hexane/heptane/etc. For toluene and similar solvents you need to salt them out or evaporate and purify further after.

I am using the Norman tek using ether which I then freeze to get crystallization. At some point I got very nice looking white crystals in the coffee filter. I made a post about it. But the crystals were re-absorbed by the wet filter. I seem to have too little DMT in the ether for some good snow-globing because the first pulls were already out...and lost. I have reduced the amounts of ether in this pull to...reflect the diminished amount left available to extract. But I can't get the ratio right it seems.

I suppose you could call it compression. That means the ratio between dissolved DMT and the solvent with temperature and other variables as parameters. I think the next batch of Mimosa will give me a more 'compressed' solution, more DMT in as little ether as possible to still get optimal crystallization.

Last time I went with 50 gram mimosa powder, 50 gram NaHO and 0.8 liter of water. I added 50 ml of ether. Then I rotated the mixture 3 times for 10 minutes, letting it separate in between. Freeze precipitation for 24 hours got me some brownish contaminated goo. Foolishly I tried an ammonia wash, which just dissolved the lot.

I am just struggling with getting the right ratio's now.?

DMT is too soluble in ether or toluene to freeze precipitate.
It should be an easy matter to evaporate your ether and recrystalize but your recrystalization solvent has to be something that DMT is only somewhat soluble in, like heptane.
Why not just pull with naptha if you want to freeze precip?

Well, I guess I will try that then. Back to the drawing board. Thanks for the advice.
