Anybody tried using petrol ether instead?

Pet ether should be equivalent to naphtha, mostly aliphatic hydrocarbons. Check the composition of your pet ether if possible (and do an evap test)

Yeah I've used it. I am using PE with a boiling point of 35-60 degrees Celsius. It evaporates without a trace, but it should: It is ACS grade. It boils if you put really hot water on a separation funnel. Next time I might opt for a slightly heaver fraction.
