Decapitated is a very nice deathmetal band....

Something about this groove: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npYBIyvHCEk

Burzum sounds nice for tripping...I don't know how brutal death metal would fare...only one way to find out!

In case you guys didn't hear, the guitarist from Slayer died.

RIP

I find it hard to believe that someone would actually ask this OP question though...

Back when I was young, it kind of went without saying. In fact, early heavy metal was actually called acid rock.

Who didn't trip listening to Sabbath and Zeppelin... Rush? People would trip at shows. Of course, the definition of what is and is not Heavy Metal was looser then. (Bands as un-metal by today's standards as Santana & Jethro Tull were considered part of the whole thing then... even early Queen!)

And no-one had started growling and going all Death oriented yet.

Watch the movie Heavy Metal if you don't believe me.

Even when it got kind of glam it was still fun to trip to. I remember seeing Maiden, AC/DC, Van Halen, Ozzy, Metalica, Dio, Queensrÿche, Yngwie etc. while tripping balls and loving it.

I generally preferred the more progressive stuff and psychedelic or jam stuff for tripping, though. As hard as it is for the young people today to imagine, rock & roll was the heart of the drug culture for a loooong time before samplers and sequencers were invented. Bands like Floyd and the Dead were institutions of psychedelia. And I am still usually more excited about the latest Primus or Phish disc dropping than any of the nameless multitudes of electronic producers stuff... I can say that because I produce electronic music myself.

Nothing quite like a loud electric guitar to give you crackling electronic waves of psychedelic joy, though.

Hmm what is metal? And what is something else?
An idiots guide to metal, rock, prog rock and shite - from the point of view of a burnt out middle age-ian (so be aware that i am a little behind the times) .....
Iron Maiden=metal
Judas Priest=metal
Rush=Prog rock
Floyd=prog rock ( capital P for progressive)
Slayer=metal (RIP Jeff Hanneman)
Metallica=metal
Queensryche=shite (IMO)
AC/DC=rock
Led Zeppelin=Rock (that is with a capital R)
Deep purple=rock
Voivod= prog metal (when they are on their game)
Motorhead=Rock
Van halen=rock with Dave Lee Roth ,and i am sorry but shite with Sammy Hagar,but Eddy Van Halen is a mutts nuts metal guitar player.
Black sabbath=Dirt rock with Ozzy, metal with Dio
Napalm death=metal
Frank zappa= all of the above and more

And i agree with Hyperspacefool- who didnt trip to rock/metal/distorted guitars????? (atleast people of a certain age). But i do enjoy the odd disturbing growl when it is incorporated into a tune.

Feel free to wade in and tell me i am talking b_____ocks!

Yes, RIP Jeff Hanneman. Not a mega fan but a fan none the less. I cranked "Reign in Blood" start to finish yesterday in tribute. What a insane thrash masterpiece!

Most new metal leaves me cold, way to processed and mechanical for my liking. High on Fire and Mastodon is probably the only few modern metal bands I listen to regularly. I love my stoner metal though but that to me is just as much in the hard rock genre... It's all sound in the end though, genres be damned!

I just cannot stand any death metal..I cant stand it. I really cant stand slayer and metallica too to be honest. I love zeppelin and rush and lots of other rock..I just dont like death metal or most heavy metal at all.

I was however, a pretty giant tool fan for a long time and would always trip and listen to tool..though when I first started tripping I would have followed incubus anywhere..back when they were really good..if anyone was ever tripping and listening to fungus amongus, enjoy incubus and then science etc you know what I mean. I must have listened to early incubus for 3 years constantly eating mushrooms.

I agree, but i think it is human nature to descriptively compartmentalise art, but yes at the end of the day it is all just pop music.

Totally! Otherwise describing music, or anything for that matter, would be real difficult without some sort umbrella to put it under.

I always liked the way one of my favourite musicians, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, put it. It's all just expression... Put it under that umbrella and almost anything in life could be construed as some kind of art or grand expression, from washing the dishes to composing Beethoven's 9th sympthony!

..you know, i listen to Tibetan Monks, but Slayer, IMO, were Speed Metal with a kind of horror movie/baroque sensibility all their own..
they suit Hip Hop sampling
(e.g. this classic Public Enemy track uses Angel Of Death..> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5AYMiAdqhQ
it's different to death metal, which i don't respond to as well..especially on LSD (haven't attempted that)

..and the late Jeff Hanneman, as a friend put it the other day, wrote his own obituary proper...
RIP
their first album shows the speed metal roots..which comes from Richie Blackmoore (Deep Purple), Judas Priest, Queen, and Motorhead..

I like that, a good philosophy for life.
Nen i agree with your influences but would add the NWOBHM bands of the late 70s . Although i wasnt a big fan , the band Venom have a lot to answer for!
A very underated proto speed metal band below

Seeing so many people on this thread praising OM, I thought I would dig out some of my discs and give them a whirl... it was only when a friend reminded me that we were listening to OHM:, and not OM that I realized I didn't really know the band you guys were talking about.

Heheheh.

Of course it was easy enough to check them out.

I must say, though, as a guy who prefers shredding over gloomy atmospheres, I still prefer Ohm: by a long shot. I guess Chris Poland (of Megadeath fame) with his prog metal, deeply knotty fusion outfit is just more up my alley tbh.

I never understood the newer metal push to get rid of guitar soloing. There is only so much crunchy riffing one can handle before one wants to hear some shredding. Riffs and battering drum fills without any leads on them are like big waves without anyone surfing them.

IMHO anyway.

Here you can hear a bit of Ohm:

i do still love playing metal on the ol' les paul however

I can totally see where you're coming from (being a guitarist that plays in a band with lots of improv and extended guitar solos), it takes a special kind of heavy band to pull off music with no solos that engages my mind to the fullest but Om is one of those bands... That, and up until the last album they have been a two piece (just bass and drums and lots of amplification). I think of them as a modern version of devotional chant style music. More mood and trance as compared to music that engages you on a more cerebral level.

And that is the beauty of music, there is so much out there that with a bit of looking, and recommendations from switched on people, everyone is happy Smile

Dug the link by the way Hyperspace Fool, definitely on an opposite side of the ohm coin (sorry for the lame pun) Big grin .

Surely, you're describing me, not yourself Pleased Very happy

I still listen to Fungus Amongus regularly. And Tool, any album. Even Opiate, which has a very different feel than the other albums.

Metal is something that works very well with psychedelics. There are many different genres of metal, and I think they're all valid. Even death metal can have a place. I don't listen to much death metal anymore, but when I do, it's usually when I'm tripping on something Smile

There are types of metal I don't enjoy. Regardless of the situation. And some of those that I don't really enjoy now I used to love when I was younger.

Tastes change. People evolve.

Someone put this on when they're tripping and you'll see what I mean. Even death metal can have a meaningful place in your experience. Smile
