I can't comment on Xylene or Tuolene but I did it with sunflower oil and d-limo.
D-limo is way more easier than sunflower oil, but sunflower oil does work. I get very steady results with the 69ron tek. Using Hcl instead of vinegar for the salting saves you from using the nasty chemical MEK. With Hcl you only deal with acetone and/or IPA (also nasty but imo less nasty

)for the cleanup.
Of course if you don't want crystals you could salt with vinegar and be happy with the Goo. If you titrate perfectly with vinegar you still can get those pencil shavings acetate without cleaning with MEK, but that's not that easy.
Have fun, it's a very rewarding process and when using d-limo as a bonus your house will smell like very fresh oranges.
If you consider to use Hcl. BE SURE not to evaporate that shit in a rust free steel oven. I can tell you it'll not be rust free afterwards from my own experience. Use a coated pot and a electrical or gas powered stove outside for that.
