Boy - Clay Render (from Hidoodlydo, Neighbor!)

Norman Rockwell meets Charles Manson was the general idea.

Girl - Clay Render (from Hidoodlydo, Neighbor!)

My very own art director/daughter, on the eve of losing a toof (for realz) one evening at eight years old. It's because of her that I do what I do. I would never have found it without her.

Clock (from Hidoodlydo, Neighbor!)

Almost midnight. Tick tock, tick tock...

If it's not already clear, the whole shebang is about death - specifically the moment in which it says Hidoodlydo - and what exactly that moment might look like.

Atomic Energy Symbol (from Hidoodlydo, Neighbor!)

Welcome to the Atomic Age. Duck and cover, bitch!

And that concludes all Hidoolydo bizness.

Tomorrow we try something new.

Mr. Van D'lay will be posting an entire 3 month project in sphere-to-finished-piece time lapse videos daily throughout the next week, with the final reveal to come at the end. It's a process deep dive with funky beatz for those who enjoy the minutiae.

Come along for the ride. It'll fuck up your brain.

And if not, well, you know how to fix that.

Alright. What we have here is a sphere. What should we turn it into?

Over the course of the next week, this sphere (and a couple of others) are going to go through some shit. By the end, we'll have a finished scene (which I'm still in the process of editing).

Music by The Mysterious Dr. FatStax.

Check em out daily!

So, I thought I would just talk a little bit about what I'm doing here:

I set out to make a Samurai mask, using a book of reference photos from a show I saw at LACMA ten years ago.

I'll use reference early to establish form, then I'll put it away and just flow. Constant Dynameshing for the first third, then I ZRemesh, polish polish polish, tweak tweak tweak, and then add fine detail in Layers. Materials and paint usually come last.

Surface designs here are typical of my work - free form, done very fast and loose, just a series of happy accidents.

In the end, what comes out owes as much to Robert Crumb and Basil Wolverton (and drugs, of course...) as it does to Samurai culture.

This is how we do things at Van D'lay Industries.

Come back tomorrow for Part II.

Welcome back to Part 2 of this week's series: What The Hell Should We Do With This Sphere?

Once it's done, you should have a better idea of where this is all going.

Part 3 coming tomorrow!

Music by The Incredible Dr. FatStax

More of the same - start with a sphere, cut it in half, extrude to give it some thickness and then we're off to the races. I believe I Zremeshed right around the 1:10 mark. Surface detail as always is done with a combination of Layers and Morph Targets.

Welcome back to Part 3 of this week's time lapse adventure. If you've watched so far, you've likely come to the conclusion that we are making a samurai. Today we begin his upper body by extracting and blocking in new geometry from an old anatomy model I made long ago (which also began life as a sphere), spending all kinds of time on stitching (which will all be thrown away and redone from scratch in tomorrow's video), and some bitchin' twin katanas.

Which brings us then to Part 4, in which Son of Sam sprouts a bunch of lower body biz, including a lot of unreasonably gratuitous stitching (which replaces the already gratuitous stitching I decided to throw out and start over from scratch).

Same basic technique here - extract new geometry from the T-posed anatomy model underneath, block it all in and then refine, refine, refine. In the end, all that remains of the original body will be head, feet and hands.

Here is my final time lapse, wherein I finish off Sam's head, fashion him a cool looking naginata and a hapless, decapitated foe.

Final project coming up shortly. It's gonna be a scorcher!!

Thank you as always to The Ineffable Dr. FatStax for the funky Samurai beats.

Thank you, endlessness. It's a labor o' love for sure.

The final piece I'll show tomorrow is a short video presentation set to music, which I'll be selling as an NFT on Known Origin, entitled "Tether Even the Roasted Chicken".

Here are finished stills for your perusal in the interim.

Tether Even The Roasted Chicken

“Tether Even A Roasted Chicken” – Yamamoto Tsunetomo, Hagakure: The Way of the Samurai

A gentle reminder to take nothing for granted in all projects and endeavors.

There are no short cuts. There is only time and consistent effort. All else is distraction.

Sculpted, painted and rendered 100% within ZBrush.

Samurai Helmet (from Tether Even the Roasted Chicken)

Thought I would share some individual elements. As the time lapses show, the helmet came first, and when I began I had no thoughts of taking him further. But once it was done I decided to take the next step and make him a mask.

Son of Sam - Helmet and Bust (from Tether Even the Roasted Chicken)

So, I pushed on to make some upper body armor and a head, then decided to finish him off completely with accessories and a base.

And this is Sam (from Tether Even the Roasted Chicken)

I'm not exactly sure just how long this unfortunate fellow's been deceased. The blood is fresh, but I also wanted his skin to have that moldy old rotten cheese look. It was of course the arrow that killed him. His decapitation came post mortem and was purely for spoils of war purposes - as all the best decapitations generally tend to be.
